The standard wheels are in the handbook 3.2. 120Nm

The general idea is tighten it as much as you can with handforce without extentions on the handle. This will be a good deal more than 120 nm, but...

1) I once tightend the bolts to exactly 120 nm, and one in four was LOOSE when I re-tightened them a week later.

2) Have You ever heard of someone over-thightening a wheel bolt? Other bolts yes, wheel bolts NEVER

PS And always re-member to re-thighten the bolts after 2-300 miles

Hm, interesting! My wheel bolts actually tighten up with time. When I changed my winter tires I barely managed to unscrew the bolts although I have never tighten them beyond hand force. I actually thought that new cars have these self-tightening bolts as a safety feature but this topic disproves my reasoning.

Yes, and no...

I think the tighten-up-with-time is actually growing in or settling in microgroves or beginning rust - some sort of getting stuck.

When I fit the wheels spring & fall, I always take a brisk 10 min. drive and then re-tighten the bolts. Something like one in four can then be thighten a little more. This is true for both my '09 Roc and the significant others '03 Mondeo.

I usually retighten after 100 miles on new wheels. I can't get a normal brace in the holes to tighten my wheels as the holes are very small, hence I needed to buy a torque wrench,

I think that the air wrenches used at car shops are 200-300 nm, so You might consider thightening to something like that.

i was cleaning my wheels today ( i had taken them off to clean the inner rim) and released i don;t have the wheel nut adapter to go with my new torque wrench..it was those ones from screwfix that comes alone.

with no other alternative, i had tighten the nuts till as far as my physical strength allows ( without putting my foot on the wrench handle).

is this safe or should i get to a tyre fitter quick?

i need time to find a 16mm nut adapter so can;t use the torque wrench until then.

Yes, this is safe.
My guess is you can torque at least 200 nm, if you are mr. normal ;)

But You should re-tighten them at any rate.

thanks Bianco, but is that it?! i swear i can do more than 200nm, especially when i am showing off ( and getting injured) in the gym.

yes, i agree to check them every 2-3k miles as you said. Mind you, its amazing how underrated the wheelnuts are.

drivers in general rarely check them.

This is very bad advice. You should tighten to the manufacturer's specification, which has been determined by the engineers who designed the cars, not some guy on an Internet forum.

Over tightening wheel nuts can lead to warping of brake rotors when subject to repeated heat cycles, stripped threads, bolt head and thread separation and safety issues when stuck on the side of the road and you can't undo the over-tightened fastener.

The engineers know best.

Erm, previous post to yours stated correct torque for VW wheels.

But you are right, over tightening your nuts is a big problem. I had to get a friendly mechanic to chiesel mine off after they had been over tightened with an air gun - thankfully with winter steels fitted and not my alloys.
