Rough/brittle door seal damaging paint

Post by andycowuk »

Hey All,

I keep forgetting to take a picture while its daylight, will try to remember tomorrow!

I noticed the other day that on the drivers door, just below the bottom of the window there is a change in texture to the seal on the door where it meets the b-pillar - the rubber is actually rough and has started to mark the paint. The passenger side is totally fine.

I am going to give it a proper clean, but just wondered if anyone else had noticed that - or even checked.

Any observations from your car may be useful.

Pics to follow

Thanks

Andrew

Already seen the potential for it to happen last December, both sides of the car.

Fitted two narrow strips and a disc of 3M anti-squeak tape to protect the paint work.
Anti-squeak tape available as VW part AKL 448 030 05 for 5m reel at £26.13 + VAT.
Commercially its 3M anti-squeak tape type 5430, price is similar to VW unfortunately.

1) Top of the Door as you've noted. (1st photo with red arrows)

2) Bottom rear corner to stop the door seal rubbing. A short section of tape running vertical to horizontal round the corner. (Green arrows in 2nd photo)

3) A disc spot to counter the door hard rubber stop rubbing in the rear bottom corner. (Yellow arrow in 2nd photo)

Also applied Krytox rubber lubricant to the door seal areas to make them more supple, VW part number: G 052 172 A1, 30ml bottle for £32. On Ebay usually for about £20 depending on the auction result - search " EOS Lub* "
Or search Ebay using "krytox" - bargain there at the moment for £2.99 & postage free for a Rover MG version - 10ml bottle (from Howards, Citroen - Taunton).

Doing this quietened a lot of the interior noise while driving along.

I can confirm then that you have acted correctly!

The scratching you can see as a bit of a dark area (circled):

The roughness of the seal you can see here.

What do we think that VW will say/do?

Dealer will most likely polish it out/clean and apply a strip of clear 3M tape as I have done (mine were custom cut to shape). Cannot see them replacing the door seal.
