Hi,

I took my car in for its first service because the 'Service Now' reminder came up on the MFD at 9300miles.
Took it to my local VW and told them to change it to longlife after the service as I do lots of miles per year.

They called me to tell me that a service will not be needed until I get to 17/18k miles.
They also said that I will get the 'Service Now' reminder until the service is carried out and they will then switch it to longlife service.

Does this sound right to you?

had this issue on our golf which should have been on longlife, the dealer reset the the service now reminder which flashed up around 18k mark so it can be done

I insisted on longlife servicing for my imminent Roc, but the service people at the dealership had changed it to 10,000miles/annual. I only realised they'd made the switch about a week later. They were able to change it back for me.

I'm pretty sure that all ROCs are filled with longlife oil at the factory (possible exception if annual service selection is possible for build options) and it's the dealer that opts out of long life when they receive it.

I don't know if I could put up with the service due warnings for another 8000 miles in your case though! Also, as the car has already decided a service is due, it won't put up a true long life service due message, so how can you be sure when the true long life service is due (this is based on oil sensor readings - presumably conductivity and normal operating temperature viscosity)?

To be honest, the first long life service for a VAG car is generally quite short. On my last Golf, service 1 came in at 13000 miles, service 2 came in at 32000 miles (so 19000 miles between services after the 1st one - depends a lot on driving style though).

As you can't be sure when your 1st longlife service should have been due (and to get rid of the annoying service reminders) i'd get the 10,000 mile service done with long life oil and then switch the scheduling over to long life.

I think they can switch you back to long life before an annual service reminder, but not after, unless it coincides with a service and they're switching you back with fresh oil. Maybe the oil quality sensor readings need to be "zeroed" with the service change, and then it detects a degree of deterioration after that to determine your next service. If this was the case and they switched you back to long life now (without the 1st annual service) the car wouldn't be asking for it's 1st longlife service for 10000 miles later than it should (just a theory).

I've done 6k and my service indicator has begun telling me when It needs doing . Dealer says wait til 10k . (same as when I had a mk5 Gti) . Just tried the same method I did on the golf to reset the service indicator so you don't get the "service in..." message every time you turn on the ignition. It worked.
So for those who want to know - Press and hold the trip reset (0)button . Turn on ignition. Release reset button. Press minute button.
All done! My car has the red mfd so can't confirm it'll work on the newer white type. If you do turn it off don't forget to get it serviced!

What kind of mileage are people getting before a first service on long life? My old GTi was at about 14k, but my Scirocco is now up to 15k and the service indicator hasn't flashed up yet.

Can't understand people wanting long life service intervals, you have paid £20K+ for the car, isn't it worth getting an annual oil change? I have always had 6 month changes it will tell on the car in later years, the long life service is for company fleet buyers who only care about low running costs for the first 2-3 years.
As long as you use correct spec oil and filter and use a VAT reg. garage you won't invalidate your warranty by not going to a main dealer. If out of warranty do it yourself- must be the most accessible filter I have ever come across

long life is approx 18k atlantis

scimitar some people do alot more than 10k miles a year so the car may well be getting an oil change once a year it will just be doing a lot more miles in between compared to someone on an annual service interval. every one uses their car for different things & is in different circumstances!
