Just had a call from the dealer as my car has gone in to have the 12v sockets looked at, so that is all sorted, but while it is in the have looked over the car and said the inner edge of both front tyres are at 2mm when the limit is 1.6mm...

now the car has only done nearly 11.5k miles, surely tyres should last longer than that??

the guy on the end of the phone said it was the way the camber is set up on that model, now that doesn't sound right to me, and i thought i would check to see if anyone else has gone through tyres fairly quickly??

My Michelin's have about 10.5k miles on them and they have little thread left... Once it gets a little warmer and I put them on, I'll give them another 2-3k miles and change them...

A bit disappointed honestly

I've got 9.5k on Dunlops with 5-6mm all round.

The inner tyre wear can't be right, I doubt VW would camber the wheels in enough to promote such uneven wear.

Madaxxer: I'd expect a minimum of 18000 miles on the fronts unless its being thrashed (would most likely have more even wear if this was the case though). If the tyre was underinflated it would wear across both the inside and outside edges of the tyre more than the centre. Uneven wear like you're saying suggests a set up fault or you've knocked your tracking out.

If the dealer suggests the camber set-up is to blame and it's normal for the TDI, then i'd disagree as they should not be setting up a car that chews up the inside of the tyres.

Are you on 17" or 18" (GT) tyres? My GT (18" Dunlops) appears to have pretty even tyre wear across the tyre width (although i've only done 8K miles).

i'm having someone check the tracking tomorrow as a favour to me.

i'm going to enquire more into this tonight when i pick the car up.

its the dealers ex demonstrator, so i haven't had it from new, so it may be that its hit a pot hole and i haven't done it.

if the tracking is right then it may be that this needs taking further because a setup like that will just chew through tyres and cost me a fortune!!

10,000 on my Dunlops fronts were pretty evenly worn but enough to stick on the rear, prob 3mm left and I do get through tyres so 11.5k if you're light is pretty poor.
Going to stick some Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics on with some 19"s in summer. Audis are very prone to uneven wear, Q7 and now A3 both eaten by 8000miles both diesels although why would suspension set up be that vastly out from petrol, surely springs different loading but camber settings would be the same?

at least they should last a bit longer now... only thing that worries me is that if i hadn't put it into have the sockets done i probably wouldn't have noticed the inner edges until it was too late, the steering didn't wobble at all, it was serviced before i got it... could have been proper tears before bed

sorted now though quickly & easily. phew.

Was gonna say, camber itself doesn't really increase inner tyre wear, but coupled with poor tracking the wear can be considerable.

I've run extreme negative camber on previous cars, but with zero toe and the wear has been fine.


Note, the camber on the Rocco isn't really adjustable, other than the extremes of the tolerances on the bolt holes.
