Door rattle.... Dealer trying to fob me off

Ive just returned from my local VW dealer. This is not the garage i bought the car from.

pretty much since day 1 of ownership the passenger door rattles when its closed. There is no issues with rattling when the car is driven or when the music is on. its just when its closed

the drivers door closes with a convincing thud where the passenger door rattles. id had enough and seeing as i had issues with condensation in one of the lamps i thought i might as well book it in for a repair

after 3 hourse i get a phone call and i am told on the phone the rattle has been cured. i go to collect the car and the rattle is exactly the same as it was before.

im not happy so tell the service guy. His words are "due to the design of the framless door you will get a small amount of rattling". you know and i know this is not right. i now have to book the car in again and pay the £10 for the courtesy car for them to try ande correct the problem again. He said they may have to strip the door down.....but they should of done this today surely

he kepted on banging on about framless doors have issues like this

anyone got rattle doors?? and was it fixed by the dealer??#

im not convinced a 25k VW should have rattly doors. the one io test drove certainly did not

If it is a trait of a frameless door, how come your driver side door doesnt do it? Does it only do it when you are not moving then?

I dont have mine yet, and havent had a car with frameless windows before, so cant help i am afraid. It sounds like they can be bothered to look too closely due to time etc...I am not sure how they charge such "warranty" issues back to VW.

My car has been into the dealers now 5 or 6 times (car is 4 months old) for a drivers door/window problem, the door seal has been replaced twice and it is now much better.

I had an Alfa Brera prior to this with frameless windows and never had a problem, my Roc was been in the dealer more times in the las 4 months than the Alfa in two years.
Last time the Roc was in the dealer gave me a Golf GTI as I complained about always being given a Polo, the GTI was quick but it was full of rattles, IMHO VW build quality has become poorer.
Keep on at the dealer.

the car has been rebooked in for a strip down of the door

im a bit hessitant to do this so will decide nearer the time wether i should put up with it. i may put in a email to VW uk

my mini cooper never rattled and i think my dads m3 has framless doors thst dont do it. i beleive this is the very first vw with frameless doors but im sure they never built the csar with QC levels thsat allowed for some rattling

im not happy to say the least.

the rest of the car is awesome but it has been spolit buy this

it only happens when the door is closed. no rattling throughout the car whilst on the move luckily

wongy008 this isn't the first VW to have frameless doors. Stripping down the door sounds like a sensible way of finding and fixing the problem, so if they are willing to do this I'd let them.

I have the same rattle on my passenger door as well. It does annoy me, so I usually just turn the music up to block it out...

I don't notice it when driving. My rattle is when the door is closed. The driver's door closes firmly but the passenger door seems to rattle and not close with a convincing thud, so to speak. Any suggestions or wait until my first service to get it looked at under warrenty?

This has just started to annoy me today. Sometimes I have another surveyor out with me in the car, and I always thought he was just slamming the passenger door really hard, but today I was out on my own and I'm really aware of the squeak / rattle going over bumps and potholes.

I just put some silicone spray around the window seals at the weekend, and I wondered if this has actually had a negative effect on the rubber?

1 the rattle passenger door
2 condenstation in rear lamp

luckily for me ive been selected to complete a IPSOS Automotive survey as part of VW AG for quality evaluation.... They got a slating off me :p

My Roc has the same rattling door problem and the dealer tells me that VW only allow 'paste' to be inserted into the locks to try to stop it. Tony was lucky to get new seals; I've asked for new seals for a few months but they tell me VW wont allow it!! The saga continues. A piece of 10mm thick closed cell rubber - about 25mm sq accidently trapped near the little rubber pimple on the door seemed to do the job but, as this is not approved by VW, it was removed. (It looks pigging ugly anyway) Meanwhile, I have written to VW UK asking for a properly engineered modification to solve the problem as the car is not considered 'merchantable quality' with this distracting and annoying rattle - I await a reply....

just for info

I have the same rattle, near the small tweeter and if I jam something soft like a micro fibre cloth between the door and the dash when closed if stops it. Some songs exacerbate the rattling but the rattle is apparent without stereo operation (Dynaudio).

Went in to dealer before xmas, told me it was a large job so needed to book it in, and I was at danger of VW not covering all the work and perhaps parts under warranty, so did I want to risk having to pay for some\all of it..?

Since you are all at it, so will I be now... Booking it in tomorrow...rr

I drive an EOS which has a reputation for rattles and squeaks especially from the roof parts. I've also had a rattly door which was a cable fixing that hadn't been done properly at the factory.Another clicking type of noise was from the end of dash fuse box lid which just needed a hint of vaseline on it to lube the offending plastic click. One of the most important maintenance tasks on the EOS is to regularly clean all the seals, including the frameless door/window seals and then give them a coating of Krytox. There's a whole section in the handbook on this topic. It's not cheap per bottle but it only needs to be used sparingly and I do mine 3 or 4 times a year. One of the big NO NO 's is silicone spray, seems it attacks the rubber and could make things worse or allow leaks. As far as EOS owners are concerned Krytox is a must for the cleaning box of tricks.Cheapest place to get it is via info@gbrtech.co.uk but they have a minimum order which used to be two bottles but it's a small price to pay for a bit of sanity! (buy with a mate to spread the cost)
One other purpose of this treatment is to minimise the problems of frozen seals, I've had no problems with mine this winter but I'm not sure if the Krytox is responsible or if I've just been lucky.
Just remembered, my car came with a pack of VW Krytox wipes so you might be able to smooth talk a dealer to let you try before you buy!

Dont take any shit from the dealers, my passenger widow made a light click when going in the fully closed position, and it was creaking over bumps, i had to point the noise out to the workshop forman after they said nothing is wrong with it. Turns out its a faulty window regulator, will let you know if it cures it, am afraid i might end up with a different rattle instead (has happened every time the car has been worked on at the dealers) :-(
