Scirocco Central

Over the last few days there has been a slight grinding noise from the back of the Rocco. Called in with my very helpfull local dealer to have the noise diagnoised as a failing wheel bearing!

Cars in on Tue for a 15 min job to carry out the warrenty work!

Anyone else had a similar issue?

No - but that is a very unusual failure for a car so new, how many miles on the clock? They can occasionally go though due to manufacturing defects.

15 min for a wheel bearing is fast!

They must have revised them significantly from some the older VWs, as the outer race on the inside and outside of the disc were pressed in place.

11,000 on the clock!

The service manager claimed its all one part that can easily be removed and replaced, hes keen to do it while I wait.

Yes - just very unlucky there I guess, I know that can be replaced very quickly and easily. I suspect the dealer will confirm that they have not seen any other Scirocco's with this fault. Hopefully they will have you sorted soon!

Yeah the senior tech that went for a drive with me said it rarely happens!

Not a Roc but my wifes Toyota has just had a new rear wheel bearing at 15,000 miles (12 months old).

Wheel bearing changed today great to have a quiet Rocco again!

Reviving an old thread here but my R is going in next week for a noisy rear right wheel bearing at 12,000 miles.

At 70mph there is a loud humming/wining from the rear right of the car, it stays the same over different road surfaces so I doubt it's the tyres. All tyre pressures checked and are spot on.

Hopefully Mr VW dealer will do this under warranty and not try to blame it on the Bilstien dampers I have fitted.

James321 have you google'd saw tooth tyre wear? Possibility as mine sounded as if it was bearing turns out to be uneven tyre wear.

when a wheel bearing goes is it a constant grinding noise or a noise that happens with each revolution of the wheel. I have a noise that occurs with each revolution, which could be a tyre problem I guess??

Well the head mechanic took it for a test drive and he straight away said wheel bearing. So the r/h rear bearing was replaced, the noise was still apparent on the test drive so the l/h bearing was replaced......guess what, noise was still apparent so it can only be a 7 month old set of tyres with less than 15k miles on the rear of the car that are causing a high frequency humming no matter what the road surface.

I'm pulling the Bridgestones off and replacing them with some Michelin Pilot Super Sports, they should work well as they are designed to work hot, the Bridgestones clearly don't work in the high ambient temps we have here.

Tyre pressures are checked every week and are spot on so I can only blame the Bridgestones and suspect they aren't a good quality tyre?

Vw main dealer replaced a front right wheel bearing on my scirocco after just 8000km, when I left it in to get a completely unrelated rattle fixed, which they could not locate untill I brought it back a second time and the cause was a loose heat shield over the exhaust. Not sure if this backs up the fact that wheel bearings can go at low mileage, as let's just say I was a little sceptical at the time, as to whether or not my car needed it replaced! I didn't ask to see the old part, but perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea for the garage to have shown it to me, and been proactive maybe and telling me they'd report it to VW. I'd have felt reassured then, I guess.

Just to confirm the saw tooth wear pattern theory. He car is currently in the workshop so whilst its up in the air I checked the rear tyres, low and behold they have the tell tale saw tooth tread wear!

Bridgestones are coming off, not a good tyre at all.
