Rattle from 'wastegate'

So noticed this rattle for a few months now and getting annoyed. Thought it was the heatshield but after taking it to my local dealer the technician produced a bulletin form VAG HQ saying that between 2000-4000rpm the wastagate produces a rattle that is a characteristic of this particular engine and 'normal' and currently not supposed to fix the problem... so what... put up with it :?

so as you can imagine i am not happy with that answer and are currently in talks with VW UK, the dealer i purchased the car from and my local dealer where i get the car serviced.

Have any other owners on here heard of this same problem? or any other channels i need to go down to investigate this issue further?

thanks in advance..

Yeah, there are threads about it all over the forum - a quick search and you'll see them.

It isn't the best scenario tbh, and doesn't look like vw are going to do anything about it soon......

Mine has had this sound from day one, can confirm after 12 months and 12,000 miles it still has. Not complained about it myself as i have read many people on the forum trying to get it sorted without success. It seems to vary from day to day or i guess some days i just notice it more. As it is not a safety related issue or even a failure it is very unlikely VW will do anything about it. Just suprised it wasn't picked up during development and changed, surely the engineers weren't happy with this sound which can be heard above the normal engine noise you would expect to hear. Only a huge amount of bad press from dissatisfied owners would make them think about doing something. Make sure you mention it in a JD power / customer satisfaction survey. This data does gets collated and passed on to the OEM's and provides important feedback. On my current engineering job we have JD power feedback amongst other quality data to consider in the design. Perhaps we should start a petition!

scirocco-sentral,

I like MANY others have had this same problem for ages now with the 2.0TSI wastegate and have been back to the dealers time and time again. I'm afraid your in the same position as all us others who hate this noise - paid 20K + for a brand new car that sounds dreadful when putting your foot down and VW refuse to do anything about it, calling it "a characteristic", LOL, yeah right, lets design a great looking car but make it sound utterly s**t!

I've actually had friends asking me whats wrong with my car after they heard this dreadful tinny rattling. Quite embarrassing.

The techies at my dealers said that even if I paid someone else to change the part/parts it would probably be exactly the same.

Such a shame cos if this was fixed it would be my perfect car.

completely agree jake..

pretty sure trading standards/ sales of goods act could influence..

scenario "hello sir we've found the scirocco that you've been looking for its gonna set you back 24k and when u accelerate the wastgate gives off a an annoying rattle would you still like to buy the car?"

EErrrrrrrrr NOooooooooooo

absolutely terrible that they wont do anything about it.. ill keep everyone posted on here as to my outcomes..

Lets gauge customer satisfaction on this issue from actual 2.0 TSI owners, i will then put this to VW customer care at the end of the month to see if we go in numbers we can get a more positive reaction. May have no impact on VW but it's worth a try.

Add your name to the list below if you own a 2.0 TSI and are dissatisfied with the rattle that comes from the wastegate under acceleration?

Jon Allen 2.0 TSI DSG

Mine rattles and I am dissatisfied with the "fob off" from VW. Wrong thread but I am also fed up with the wiper rattle and smear also which got another "fob off" from VW.

Mines not doing it today! Really is an intermittent issue, some days it's really audible and others not which doesn't help when you take it to the dealers. Sounded sweet today. Will keep my eye on it.

Guys,
A while back i did a bit of fiddling around with the heatshield under the car, close to the area of the exhaust which goes into the engine bay. As the heatshield was easy to bend, I manouvered it away from the exhaust as I thought this had something to do with it. My ears suggested the noise was coming from under the car rather than in the engine bay, and to be honest, its made a difference. Although the noise has not fully gone away, it is alot quieter and at times I cannot hear it..

annoys me too . mines done it from day one and i wrote to vw about it. thay said they were aware of the problem but as stated there was no fix of yet. they were quite keen to state that fixes were being introduced to models all the time and that there maybe one in the future. i reckon it was bull and its just a way to make you think it might get sorted in the future when it won't

Mine makes the waste gate rattle and hasdone since day one. VW replaced the turbo to try and cure it to no avail.

Did anyone get anywhere with VW and the wastegate rattle? Done a bit of searching but this is the most up to tdate post I can find.

My 10 plate 210 2.0 FSI has had the problem since day one, and after 1,000miles done seems to be getting louder.

you shouldnt have to drive hard or turn up a stereo to drown out a noise. would you do this if the wheel bearing was making a noise - no.

i wasnt aware that the new 210 ps cars did it too. i thought they were changing something to fix it in all new cars.
