I always make a mental note of the mileage when I give my car to the dealers, and leave the trip meter unzeroed. Last time I had the car in to get the parking sensors repaired, I noticed it had 10 extra miles on it and the car was left in sport mode, whereas I'd left it in normal mode. (fortunately the traffic is so bad where the dealer is they couldn't have gone more than 10 miles in an hour!)
Problem is, if you were working at a garage, if someone handed a half decent car in, wouldn't you be tempted to at least give it a little go?

Ok, in this other person's case, 162 miles is extreme and totally unacceptable. Though I did read in a whatcar? magazine a while back, someone who's car had been written off due to the person from the dealer taking it on a track day! They agreed to pay the market value and no more!

In future, I'd actually make a note of the mileage on the work form, that way at least they also know that you know what the mileage is and hopefully provide some deterrant.

From previous experience, I found the Ford, Rover and VW did tend to put miles onto the cars, whereas BMW were especially careful (though of course their servicing etc costs more).

I had an 'incident' with a dealer while a previous car was in for servicing. I always make sure now to take a picture using my mobile before I hand the keys over as this way you have a dated and timed photograph as evidence of the mileage covered.

I used to work at a well know mainstream car parts store. Whilst in to have a new stereo fitted a customer once phoned to ask why his M3 had just overtaken him in his wifes car on the motorway, doing what he estimated to be the best part of 130 mph. Needless to say someone lost their job that day.
