Test Drive Impressions of DSG silver Scirocco....

Hello everyone :)

I'm a Mk5 GTI driver (modified) and had a long test drive of a silver DSG new Scirocco but with no intention of buying one - My VW dealer knows me very well and offered me the drive because they wanted to know what I thought. I've written it up with 25 photos on Biali Motorsport : -

I've no wish to hijack your forum, so will discuss anything about it here in this topic.

Great review thanks.

I bet I'll be lucky to get a 15 minute drive let alone a stop for a photoshoot :D

One very good review.

I would be very interested to see if your opinion changes at all if you get to test a car that has at least 500 miles on the clock whereby the engine brakes and suspension has had time to bed in properly. I know that there will be only minor differences but from my experience with my previous car, these very minor changes amounted to one big overall difference.

....I found the suspension to be outstanding but questioned the point of having three settings which are only subtley different. The brakes were as good as the standard GTI and again I find those effective as brakes but am critical of the pedal response (over servo'd). I am spoilt with AP Racing's Big Brake Kit though which is truly awesome in all respects.

Yes, the engine will loosen up but it's a very gradual process usually taking much more than 500 miles. At least it was with my Mk5 GTI.

I know it would be unfair to base my review on nothing but a direct comparison with a heavily modified Mk5 GTI but I tried to write my review based on my expectations of such a car. I think of the Scirocco as a performance car rather than just a comfy average car and know what I would want from it.

Very glad to hear you enjoyed the review. :)

agree with the over servo issue, it takes some time getting used to, my other half repeatidly tries to put me through the windscreen on my A3

dsg is an acquired taste, i found the edition 30 with it a truley emotionless experience on roads I know well and not for me, it is an individual thing

my tfsi in my a3 has just notched up 50k and just gets better, all be it wish its thirst for oil would would reduce

do not see the scirocco gt as a true performance car, given its floor plan origins, i think with any coupe (ish) purchase people want something that looks abit different and to stand out, given we'll have a new gti at the same time i am working on the pretence we will have the best of both worlds

....I think that I may have made the mistake of expecting the Scirocco to be a performance car. She certainly could be made into one - The GT24 version has already been extremely successful.

DSG is an acquired taste but I acquired it instantly! It just took time to familiarise myself to the point where it became untuitively natural and flowing. I'm about to start writing a response to a DSG quezzie in the other thread here. "Emotionless"? - I'm surprised to read that - there's a huge buzz in being able to so reliably and quickly shift gears when driving hard. But each to their own.
