Hey guys, wondering if someone on here could give me a bit of help...

If I was to buy and fit a set of alloys (which aren't made by VW) to my new scirocco (when I get it) would it void my warranty?

As long as they fitted correctly onto the hub and had the correctly rated tyres I don’t see the reason why not.

It could however invalidate your insurance cover if you did not tell them that it was no longer standard.

This may sound a stupid question, but here goes haha...

So does getting a different type of alloys even though there the same size 18" and same tyre 235/40 R18 mean that when I apply for insurance it has had "modifications", excuse my ignorance....

does the same applies to official VW wheels? for example if i have a set put on from the accesories catalogue after getting the car?

should be 'standard' enough - say the dealer put it on instead of those workers in portugal...

I phoned my VW parts department, they said no worries about adding aftermarket alloys, aslong as the offset is 2/3 either side of there standard offset of 41mm, an the tyres are the same size as they advice. The only issue with warranty is if you try an stick anything above 19" on the scirocco as there not made for any bigger than that. So its all good...

With regard to the insurance it is because by adding different alloys from standard it makes it more attractive to the less honest people out there and therefore at greater risk.

They would more than likely not change the premium but it is always better to be safe than sorry and tell them anyway rather than give them a way to get out of a pay out should you be unlucky.

You still need to notify them if other VW wheels are put on - anything above and beyond what a standard Scirocco has counts as a modification, even if those 'extras' are VW extras.

Just to clarify that - any extras that were factory ordered count as the original spec and do not have to be declared to your insurance company.
So you have an odd situation that if you ordered a 1.4TSi with 18" Interlagos alloys they would be seen as standard spec.
However if you orderd your 1.4TSi with the standard 17" alloys and changed them for 18" Inters they would be seen as a modification.

That isn't strictly true. When I had my MINI any extras (including the Chili pack) whether they were factory fitted or not, had to be decalerd to the insurance company. Likewise with the MR2 roadster I had - the factory fitted AC and hardtop had to be declared. This was also the case when I used to work for an insurance brokers - anything above and beyond the standard spec, factory extra or not, was considered a modification.

Mmmmm... that differs from what I was told when hunting round for quotes for my new Roc a few months ago.
Perhaps there isn't that level of consistancy within the insurance industry.

There is no consistency that is true. The AA were one of the only companies I came across who accepted anything factory fitted as not a modification. It's always better to declare everything though rather than risk it - they may make no charge but better to let them know than run the risk of them refusing to pay out on the insurance if you need it. After all, insurance companies will do anything to wrangle out of paying out!

agree deacon insurers deem optional extras as modifications, no joke rear parking sensors makes your quote go up for ##### sake

You should have seen my MINI insurance docs - it was two pages long with all the extras you can rack up on a MINI!!

mmm, does this means the standard 17inch is deemed as standard i.e. without them you cannot move the car, and anything paid extra for ( 18inch interlagos - either fitted in portugal or when it lands in UK) would be classed as extras thus 'modifications'?

i am curious because i am wondering if i could change the wheel on my order, and wondering about the other side issues like pushing the build date back.

and what about those big strips that runs along the middle of a car? surely they make the car go faster and more prone to accidents?! They should be declared as a high risk 'mod', especially on Citreon C2s.

From the insurance companies point of view "go-faster" stripes could represent a slightly higher risk.
If they make the car look like its faster or sportier then it will be more at risk of being stolen.
Also in event of a claim for damage to a side panel there may be additional repair costs in matchng up a new section of stipe. Or if that stripe is no longer available removing it - from both sides of the car - and replacing it with something similar.
Not a huge cost I know but you can see how these things can cause problems.

Wheel changes have to be decalred and count as a mod but some insurance companies will charge for a factory fitted wheel change and some wont. As for graphics my MINI had stripes on the bonnet and a checked roof and both had to be declared.
