What's the best iPod setup for browsing music?

Hi Everyone,
I've recently picked up my new Scirocco and am absolutley loving it so far!
The only thing that's proving to be a pain is the iPod menus... I have a lot of music on my iPod and scrolling through it all to find what I want to listen to takes a long time, especially since the RCD 510 seems kinda laggy.
So, does anyone have any tips as to how to arrange all your music so that it's easy to find what you want? Or, ideally, am I just being a muppet and haven't noticed a "search" option somewhere!
I'm considering setting up smart playlists for "Artist - A" "Artist - B", etc, but that will just list everything within the same folder so I'll not be able to easily see album info etc.
Any advice of how you lot got round this would be greatly appreciated! As it stands I'll end up staring at the screen more than the road - probably not a wise move!
Cheers
Pete
