RCD 510 vs RNS 510, please help!

Hi all, apologies in advance for repeating this topic again.
I am getting delivery of my Scirocco tomorrow, and its a 59 plate (10 model?). It comes equipped with a RCD 510 with MDI (Ideally I would have liked to have the RNS 510 but this deal was too good to pass up!)
All I want to know is, what can the RCD 510 actually do? and what am I missing out on? Sat Nav obviously? DVD playback? HDD?
From other threads I have gathered that:
-32 GB SD card can be filled with music and played
-Ipod Connex
-35 Stored Radio Stations without changing Band
What else can it do? Because it has a colour screen, can it be used to play AVI files? Can I connect an external HDD to the USB, full of music?
If the RNS 510 is a lot better, there are a few unites going on ebay for about £500, are they easy to replace? can I get it to work with the steering wheel controls and trip comp easily?
One last question, does anyone have a link to the manuals I can download?
Lot of questions there, and many thanks to all replies.

This is also a useful page. It gives a breakdown so that you can compare the units.

Hi
I am new to forum so please bear with me if this has been covered before elsewhere.
Ive just taken delivery yesterday of a Scirocco that is ex-demo so already built. Its the GT, registered July, dont know the build date, done 900 miles.
I wanted Sat Nav but obviously got whatever it had in it which is the RCD510. Ive been looking round for a while at options to upgrade to RNS510 without paying out £1500 and it seems I can pick one up from ebay or from a few auto specialists for a lot less and get one fitted for £35-£70.
My question is just how plug and play is the new unit. My understanding was that providing I
a) Choose the seller carefully and get the activation codes, maps etc on DVD
b) Choose the version b model
its just a matter of the fitter using the removal tools to unhook the RCD510, unplug it, plug in the RNS510, slot it back in, set up the activation codes etc and away we go. The problem is that the more forums I read, the more i come across people posting about alll sorts of issues such as
-firmware upgrades bricking the system
-needing to do something via VAGCOM to programme car to accept the unit
-conflicts with some form of "factory compass module" already fitted to non Nav motors that send conflicting signals to the unit and needing VAGCOM to disable it
-Needing to make CANBUS alterations.........
............. and so on and so forth. If so, thats far from plug & play and gets into the realm of full reprogramming.
Can you guys who have done it give me any views o whether the upgrade was really a fairly routine matter?
Secondly has anyone had any issues with the dealer over the warranty as its not done via an authorised outlet?
Finally, anyone used OEM Retrofits, the outfit that advertise o the web and offer a full supply/fitting service. They are located quite close to me.
Thanks

That's pretty much it.
The RCD can play music from mp3 CDs, SD card, ipod and USB and aux in connections. It holds 6 CDs and a stack of radio stations. If you have the multifunction wheel you can do next/previous and fast forward/rewind with the steering wheel buttons while you drive.

Nope

Certainly a USB stick. Not sure about a full on external drive but I would think it's possible.

Thanks for the replies guys, basically I am not missing out on a great deal. I will try and get an external passport HDD to work when plugged into the USB, I don't see why it wouldn't. Will keep you posted on it.
By the way I pick up my 59 plate car tomorrow, just a standard GT 140 TDI DSG in plain white, and I added some parking sensors to it. The only options I would add are the sat nav and maybe the folding mirrors, because i hate folding them myself! I'm in no rush though.
I will add some pics of the new car whenever I can! I feel like its xmas day tomorrow and i'm 12 again.

Hey Guys, I just got off the phone to a car specialist (CarsTCM) and they said they have a unit which is everything in one, Mp3, MP4, plays Divx, Sat Nav, Bluetooth integrated with your phone and it costs £899 fitted.
What do you think?......
Does anyone know this make and model number?

Guys does anyone know what maps system the rns 510 uses? Is it route 66? Tom Tom?
Also what are the probabilities of the RNS being bricked upon updating firmware?

Hi
just to reply for the OEM retrofit question. I have just used them today -most impressed. Fitted an Fiscon plus to my scirocco. Faultless -traveled from Bradford to Tee-side to fit and great guys.
Fison works perfectly with 3G iPhone too
