I note Cruise Control is listed both as a factory-fitted option is priced at £215, whereas the Cruise Control Pack - 1 K0 054 690 A - including fitting by the retailer is priced at only £153 in the UK price list dd 1 May 2009.

Are these the same systems or is one better than the other justifying the price differential?

there both identical. I have the dealer fitted system, when I ordered I wanted cruise and let them decide if they wanted to fit it, or if they would have it factory done. You get all the same indicator lights, the green cruise symbol in the speedo, the readout for speed in the MFD etc. My only downside is they damaged my airbag unit and wheel on putting it all back together, so the horn doesnt work, but they've ordered a new wheel and horn, so all's well.

Read out for speed in the MFD? I don't have that. Is yours one of the newer ones with the newer MFD?

i think you only get that with the cruise control pack S8N.

Could someone post a picture of this "speed read out" display?

Hi, mines a 2010 model. At the bottom of the MFD it tells you what speed the cruise is set too, cant really photo it as you can only activate cruise when your driving, It comes up where the odometer reading is usually. As soon as you switch on cruise the speed you had it set to pops up there, and you can alter it by pushing the top button or bottom button on the stalk. I'll go see if it comes up when your stationery, but the cars in the garage just now so I cant move it.

Sounds like you have the newer MFD. Us with the older MFD don't get the ODO part

Cruise off, odometer showing, and above is Km/h as the speedo has only Mph on it Cruise on, display shows current speed which is set on the cruise

I had mine dealer retro-fitted - £153 from Leicester VW. All works great - the only problem is they managed to break the auto correcting indicator functionality (the indicators no longer automatically turned off after straightening up the steering wheel) so it had to go back again to fix that. It seems judging by alanstead's experience and mine it is quite easy to break things when retrofitting it!
But, its all good now, was fixed under warranty. Well worth doing in IMHO - I missed not having it.

Totally agree Alex, I managed to fit cruise control to two audi A4's myself over the years and never broke anything! But hey, these VW technicians are top trained blokes, so I must just have been lucky!! Like you say tho, all good, one new steering wheel and airbag unit later, alls well.

I opted for factory fit so my nice new motor didn't have to be taken to bits for cruise to be fitted. Had it retro fitted to my MK5 Gti and the dealer had the car for a day trying to code it, and not all the trim was fitted back properly . Hence I played it safe

New MFD? Do you mean the MY2010 changes or has there been another update to the MFD since then

I only ask, as I paid for factory fit, and mine doesn't show the speed on the display, just the green light behind the dial. (unless I need to read the manual to turn this feature on)

Hey greenstick, I'm not sure, mines a 2010, just assumed they were all the same. I have no option in the highline to activate or deactivate anything to do with the speed display for the cruise. It is handy having this feature because it lets you know what its set at, so when you re engage cruise you know what its going to stop at, where as with my A4, you'd knock off cruise then re activate it a bit down the road and it would take off because you had it set much faster than you would want it to go. With the system in the Roc, even when its disengaged, you can adjust the speed at which it will reactivate at, so if your going into a thirty limit, you can knock it off on the way in, then set it to thirty, then reactivate it once in the limit.
