Air intake not entirely utilised for power?

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed that the air intake (small "funnel" just below the bonnet in the bumper) does not solely feed the airbox. Only half or so of that "funnel" goes to the air box, the bottom half is "open" and just goes straight to the engine bay.
Does anyone know why? Likely cooling, but for something in particular? Could I not use the entire intake for power?
I'd also like to know if anyone has fitted an intake similar to the golfs where it utilises the entire length of the front grill as an intake?
Thanks!
