Sounds like a tank...

Been meaning to come on here for months but life has gotten in the way.

Purchased a Scirocco a 18 months or so ago as a run around. All sounded and drove sweet as a nut when I purchased it. However it seems to be quite a n instant thing about 8 months ago started it one morning and it literally sounded like a tank. Stupidly loud, mixture of what can only be described as knocking and rattling together.

As said it's a run about and only used 3 times a week for a 2 mile trip up and down the motorway and back. Hence the delay in me posting.

It starts on the button no matter the weather and as soon as you drive it and it's off idle it actually seems to be of normal noise, it doesn't increase or anything the quicker you go, if anything seems to get quieter.

It still pulls like an absolute train, shifts through all gears fine? It's a GT TDI DSG (59 plate). I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what it may be? Have a feeling people will be saying DMF so just probably wanting confirmation? The aux belt pulley also doesn't spin freely, someone said with it all ovv you should still be able to move the 'fan' part either way with a screwdriver but mine doesn't move anywhere, not sure that would create the noise it has though?

Like I say it still starts perfectly and drive perfectly, seems normal sound off idol?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

It’s really difficult to diagnose a DMF issue on a DSG because you don’t have the clutch pedal to feel the thumping through it.
I’m not sure what you mean by the aux belt pulley not moving freely, if you could elaborate further on this, it may help a little more as the aux belt doesn’t connect to the fan (assuming you mean the coolant fan?)
Any reputable gearbox / clutch specialist would be able to give you a better idea of it is the DMF.
What sort of mileage are you on? Has it ever had a DMF before? They can last anywhere between 70ish k - 110ish k on a manual, not sure on the dsg model but I’d assume it be similar. Hope this helps.

My dmf is also in a bad state.
If you start it cold it’s quite loud but as soon as you put it in drive the sound goes away.
