Revs surging while cruising??

2012 R DSG, while driving along at low revs there is a little surge every couple of seconds. Yesterday there was an instance where I kicked down to overtake and there was a failure where I was stuck in 2nd gear, so I let off the throttle a little and it changed up. Since that incident there is a gentle surge in revs almost like a pulse. Any ideas what this could be before I let a garage have my eyes out with repairs?
