Hello! Recently (3 weeks ago) I bought VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI 184 2015. Today after coming home from petrol station I started to hear wierd sound behind glovebox when ignition was on. Here's a recording of that sound
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Can someone tell me if this is normal or its something serious?

Thanks for the help

Hi. Can you hear the sound if you lift your bonnet?

Try switching off the climate control to see if the noise stops as it could be one of the air direction / mixer flaps being driven against the end stop.

I checked everything under bonnet. Sound is definitely coming from something placed behind glovebox, also noise is much more muted in comparison with inside.
Cuprabob I also thought that could be the case but it didn't changed anything .Just to be sure I checked it again and it's the same with on or off .

I think it's something in relation to fuel . MFD is getting crazy showing random fuel consumption (repeating from 200 mpg to 0 )while driving. Could it be fuel filter?

Sounds as if you are viewing the instantaneous mpg display which jumps all over the place while driving with the limits being "200" and "- - -" The average mpg display on the MFD is much more useful.

No, it won't be the fuel filter plus it's on the other side of the engine bay nearer the front.

I think you're right. I had average option on all the time but probably I did press something while driving. Either way I'm taking car today for full service to be sure it's nothing major. Thanks for the help!

So I got the car back. They said that they can't hear anything. I didn't pay anything but still it's outrageous. So after watching yt video I decided to remove glovebox and I think I found problem. It's a air flap as Cuprabob said . It's moving by itself " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Is it hard to fix ? That noise is driving me crazy

As I previously said if you switch the climate control off that should stop the flap moving. If it annoys you that much you could just temporarily unplug the power to the motor.

If it is a flap continually driving against the end stop then sometimes a simple reset using VCDS can resolve the issue. It's worth reading any fault codes on the climate control system, also using VCDS to see what it says. If the issue is not with the flap or the motor itself then it may be necessary to replace the control panel.

Thing is I'm not using climate control so it's off most of the time but it's still making noise . Still thanks for suggestions. I will read up more about this and decide if this is something I could do myself .

So just to confirm you are switching it off by pressing the "off" button so the fan stops and the only LED on in the control panel the one on the "off" button. I don't just mean switching it off the "auto" function. I'm just checking we mean the same thing as I've owned my Scirocco for nearly 9 years and only switched it off once in thatbtime, just to see what tje button did :)

Tjere arevseveral variants of the climate control panel but on my car it's the bottom left button.

Yeah I'm pressing "off" button :) I'm only using AC when someone is with me in car and nag me that is too cold/hot , to cool down inside if car was on sun or periodically just to keep it fresh

I had the same issue. 2015 face lift. In behind the glove box, you get this clicking/knocking sound. It is an air circulation motorised flap opening and closing. It doesn't matter if the you have the air turned on or off. It is a relatively common issue, google "scirocco clicking noise glovebox", it happens to golfs too.
That flap does some kind of procedure when you start the car and when you turn it off after the car has been running a while. I'm guessing the motor or a sensor if fecked, so it just keeps repeating this procedure and thus making noise. After driving the car for a while it goes away, but then again when you shutdown it happens again.

My local VW garage said the same shit about not hearing it. Over time it got worse and more frequent and the next time I brought it in, I showed them research I did online, they finally admitted issue and fixed it. I think they replaced the unit. It was under warranty so I'm afraid I have no other details, it was in the garage for half a day.
