Red oil pressure - stop engine warning.. Car in the garage

So was driving along at about 30 in a 60 stuck behind a bus, Dropped a gear and went to overtake, just as I passed the bus my warning light came on and the car started to sound like a tractor.. Pulled over as soon as I could and got her towed home. There is plenty of oil in the engine but noticed a few spurts of oil near an intercooler pipe.

She's in the garage now, the same garage which dismissed my rough idle and misfires.. Saying its supposed to sound like that.. Sure it is!

So just waiting to hear the diagnosis.. But everything I've read makes me think it's the oil pump.. Maybe uptake pipe blocked.. Seems to be a common problem.

We shall see in the coming days!

keep us informed.

Whats the mileage and how often do you change the oil?
Id drop the sump first, then check the pick up pipe. You did the right thing by getting it towed immediately so hopefully there is no damage.

I bought it at 22500 miles, I took it to 30000 in the last few months. The oil got a top up a few weeks ago, just took about quarter of a litre. It had a service 3 or 4 months ago.

They got back to me today, its getting a fully engine rebuild under warranty. Its a known problem, what I thought it was, the oil pump. Apparently its a common issue but not common enough for a recall.

A quick Google of oil pump failure will bring up a lot of results of audis and vws suffering the same thing.

Quite happy at the idea of an engine rebuild. Do you think they will reset the milage?

No, they won't reset the mileage and nor should they.

Got the car back today. The oil pump spindle had worn and failed.. As I expected from everything I had read online. Got an entire new engine on warranty. It sounds much better.. No more rough idle, so much more responsive and faster.. Its amazing. Well chuffed.

Good result and remember to allow the engine to bed in by not putting any undue stress on it for the first thousand or so miles. I would also confirm that the garage reset the service counter memory otherwise it will now be out of sync.

Also pay close attention to fluid levels as new engines can use a little oil until they have bedded in and the coolant level can drop a little due to air locks.
