I am watching with a bid to buy a couple of RNS5 units off Ebay. They are both DAB which is a pre requisite the button on the uppermost right, One is a mic symbol and one has a star. Can any one enlighten me the difference, I guess the star one is the latest version?

The ones with a Microphone are Skoda Columbus units, perhaps you mean the ones with a speaker & letter i? The ones with a Star button are the later ones.
In a nutshell, anything with a microphone is a Skoda unit and will have green menus and won't work fully in a VW. Anything with a Speaker & i will be a really old unit and will not have DAB as they didn't (some will be Skoda units also). Anything with a Star button will be a later VW unit and may (or may not) have DAB.
