New to the forum- Clutch question

Post by Dicky »

Hello all,
I’m looking to buy my daughter a 2.0L TSI GT DSG and would appreciate, if possible, some insight into what to look out for.
I read a post on the forum about those with manual gearboxes who have experienced clutch noise problems caused by either the release bearing or the clutch itself.

Anyone know if the DSG suffers from a similar problem or for that matter any common problems experienced by their owners. All info welcome and thanks in anticipation.

The issues you refer to are for the manual gearbox. The 6 speed DSG, which has 2 clutch packs, one for the odd gears and the other for the even is generally reliable as long as the DSG oil and filter is changed on schedule, which is 40k miles. The most common failure on them is the Mechatronics Unit which is a couple of grand to replace, however there are a few places that can repair them for a few hundred pounds. Just make sure that when you test drive any car the the up changes and down changes are smooth and clunk free.

If you are considering a 2.0 TSI then do some research on the timing chain tensioner as it was an issue, depending upon what age of car you're looking at.

Many thanks for your input young man! Good stuff to know. Not sure what the Mechatronics unit is but will research it, assume it’s poss the control computer.

While I’ve been browsing I’ve also discovered the Buying Guide in the Active Topics section. However Apis anyone else would like to offer advice I’d appreciate it.

Now know what it is. Do you think it’s best to leave the dsg in automatic and nort play with the gear changing facility. Just realised I don’t fully undefstand what the DSG is. I assume it’s like my wifes S-max where you can have it in full automatic or push the lever to one side and change gear manually by pushing or pulling in one direction to change up or down

Different people have different preferences. Some people just leave it in "Drive", some people prefer "manual" where you can change gear using either the paddles or tip the gearstick forward and back and there is also a "Sport" mode where it holds onto gears longer and downshifts earlier. Best thing to do is to take one for a drive and try it out in the various modes.

In summary, yes similar in operation to the box in your wife's Ford.

I am fortunate to experience the best of both worlds, my Scirocco is manual but we also own a Polo GTI DSG which I have great fun with. For most of the time, then yes - the gear lever is in full auto, but I tend to go into manual control for more spirited driving or on steep hill climbs where the DSG always seems to select a gear lower than is really necessary.
