Power steering doesnt work below 5mph.

Hi all.

Ive got a bit of a weird issue with my power steering. On initial start up i have no power steering until i go above 5mph, then it kicks in and its fine for the remainder of the journey. As long as the engine is running then all works as normal.

However if I switch it off for more than 10 minutes, when restarted the same problem occurs, nothing below 5mph. If i switch off and restart quickly then its still fine.

Its weird that it kicks in at exactly 5mph, which makes me think that it may be a speed sensor or something??

I know that it has an electric rather than hydraulic system so does that mean there are no pumps or fluid reservoirs to check?

Any advice as its a PITA when parking?

2008, 2.0 petrol.

Cheers

First thing to do is to a scan and see if any fault codes are stored.

When you experience no power steering, does the steering red waning light come on?

You are correct, it is an electric system so no fluid levels to check.

I do have access to VCDS at my work so am planning on doing a scan to check for codes.

I dont get any warning lights staying on. The red steering light comes on when i turn to ignition but goes off and doesnt come back once started. Cant remember if its always done that but I presume so.

So I finally got round to a vcds scan tonight.

Guessing it all boils down to address 44 fault code 03252:engine control module for HV drive.

Any ideas anyone?

Also my alarm is now playing up and going off all the time which will be the other faults. Any thoughts on those would also be welcome.
