I want to proactively change the pistons on my 09 1.4 TSI scirocco. Besides the ones from the VW (which are not cheap) I've only found Nural pistons to have the OEM code of only CTHD pistons (03C107065CK). namely these: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/nural/10354030" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Do you guys reckon it's worth going for the original VW pistons or I'm fine with Nural? Any of you used these? Those are twice as cheap as the VW ones and I'm not really sitting on a pile of cash but I also don't want to go from shitty pistons to sightly less shitty

Or you you have OEM alternatives for CTHD pistons, I'm all ears

I would generally say yes to Nural pistons(they are a part of Federal Mogul group so no problem here), but for this particular engine, I would stay on the very safe side.
First of first, there are no CTHD pistons. After 2012, all 1.4 TSI engines have the new and improved pistons. There is a whole story here. Mahle was the original manufacturer of pistons, and they kinda screwed up. After 2012, Kolbenschmidt redesigned the pistons, and the "cthd" piston was borned.

So, you basically have 3 large options:
- OEM pistons
- Kolbenschmidt pistons(these are the same pistons as the OEM, but at a good price, and a nice box)
- performance pistons(Wossner etc)

Regarding the KS Pistons, are you 100% sure those are post 2012 pistons as found in cthd? The KS pistons have also piston part number found in CAVD engines (OE pistns and Nural does not), furthermore, there are online parts stores (which was confirmed by a family friend who runs a part store) which doesn't state CK part number (as in the post 2012 pistons) for the 40846600.

Yes, I am 100% sure, as my info was confirmed by a Kolbenschmidt rep.
Parts cross reference generally works for the OE codes, not aftermarket.

Otherwise, KS lists the piston for the CTHD engine(of course they do, they make it for the VW factory).

Ok, fair enough, I did some digging too and everything you've said checks out.

It's just the fear that for most car parts stores for the KS piston the CK part number isn't listed only up to CF or whatever, yet a lot of people on this forum say KS pistons replace the Mahle shitty pistons.

If you want to sleep well, buy the OEM piston, and call it a day

I might, but atm I'm just really trying to get as much information as possible since the rebuilt is scheduled only 3-4 weeks by now.

If you buy them in standard size, then you don't need other parts besides the regular(full gasket set - no exception; bolts etc)

Hi spuf, i have a 2012 1.4 tsi but the engine code is CAVD. Does this mean i have the new and improved pistons? Is there any way to check which pistons i have without disassembling the engine?

If it's cavd it's probably the old ones

I'm planning to get Revo stage 2 remap, so I'm considering upgrading to that piston myself. I'm wondering what other parts do I need to buy other than the piston set itself to get the installation done?

No way with CAVD pistons. My compression was perfect before I got forged pistons yet the mechanic when I did the upgrade said the rings were slowly starting to go bad (and I had 0.5-1l oil consumption at 7500-10k km).

I would go with either KS chtd pistons or wossner if you're willing to pay a little extra

I had the same problem, my engine have around 1l oil consumption at 6k-10k km

I'm not sure mate, I went to the mechanic with the wossner pistons and couple of gaskets and I've told him to just buy whatever it was also necessary.

If you buy a kit like this please make sure the pistons part number ends with CK, or has Kolbenschmidt pistons. However, I strongly advice you to just get the pistons to the mechanic and tell him to order separately whatever additional parts he needs (there are tons of gaskets, bolts etc).
