What oil are you'all using?

Post by vladandrei51 »

I will change my oil in 1000 miles or so and I'm wondering what oil are you all using/recommending me for 1.4 TSI 160 hp.

Some people say I need 504/507 but that's only 5w30 and some say I need 0w40 (which would be extra helpful because of the temperature ranges in my country (even up to 40C during summer)).

Which one should I go for? 504/507 or 0w40?

I did let VW change the oil when it was going in for a DSG service.

They fitted it with long life oil or whatever it's called, on the bill it says they used 5w30; luckily enough that's also what I kept at home to add some if needed

5w30 is recommended or 5w40, if you live in a warmer climate. Longlife oil (VW504.00/VW507.00) can be used for both types of service regime whereas VW502.00 can only be used for time and distance regime.

Personally I use longlife oil but change it as per time and distance regime.

Oil specs on link below;

Whichever brand is down to personal choice. I use Castrol, She'll and Quantum (Fuchs)

You should not be able to notice any difference on the oil spec change unless in some very extreme weather conditions (super hot or super cold).

What I have noticed though is considerable improvement in MPG when I shifted away from VW Oil (it is essentially Castrol). Poured Shell Hellix Ultra - 5 mpg up; poured Amsoil - other 5 mpg up. VW oil sucks, read about it and you will see its "fully synthetic" label is actually a marketing blob. It may be a safe option in the short run but if you plan to keep the car for longer, have it tuned or drive it hard / on track days, I don't think it is that safe anymore.

I'm well aware Castrol is shit, but I was wondering if switching over to 0w40 instead of 5w30 would benefit me in terms of reliability and whatnot.

There are dudes who claim that starting the engine on 0w40 oil is smoother

Fair enough but how can you tell if 1 brand is better than another putting aside opinions of others?

Is there a difference in performance? Less engine noise?
