Thinking of buying a Scirocco

Hi, im looking to buy a scirocco.
Its got to be either the 140/170BHP Diesel or the 1.4 TSI 122BHP.
My only concern i have with the petrol is the reliability, judging by what i read over the internet the chain driven TSI engine is probably one of the worst engine VW have made? That leaves me with the oil burner.
Ive never had a Diesel and i have always drove low engine petrol cars so never really had a " fast " car. ie 2.0 GTI - When i look at the tech specs of the 170BHP TDI the numbers look good?
Ive been told to avoid the 2.0 TDi but is it as bad as everybody makes out?
I drive around 14,000 a year. Im not bothered at about MPG, its more the insurance on the 2.0 petrol is too much for me being in my early 20's. Also again the reliability.
I'm saving to buy a MK7 GTI and want something to keep me smiling for the next year.
2.0 TDI or 1.4 TSI (122) ?

I'm not sure why you have been told to avoid the 2.0 diesel. Especially in 170 form, it offers a good compromise between performance and economy. As long as your not doing short journeys, then you are unlikely to have any issues. They are belt driven engines, with a recommended 5 year change interval.
Even the 140 variant has reasonable performance.
Obviously diesels are getting bad press at the moment but I wouldn't let that put you off.
What I would do is drive the options open to you and buy the one you enjoy the most whether it be petrol or diesel.

Thanks for the reply.
It must be the recent news regarding diesels. Every time I ask somebody if I should buy the 1.4 Tsi or 2.0TDI the response I get is " there heavy up front, too slow, boring and you'll have dpf issues " - just get the petrol.
I think I'll have to test drive one, is there anything esle I should be keeping an eye out for when looking to buy a 170BHP 2,0?
I drive around 60 miles a day 4x a week - 30 miles there & back, and then what ever miles I do around that. Some short some not.

You won't have any DPF issues doing those types of journeys.
There are plenty of the 140 TDIs second hand but 170s are a bit rarer, so finding one may be the issue especially if you're looking for a particular colour / trim / spec.
I've hated diesels all my life but a few years ago I decided to buy one based on mileage and to be honest it surprised me. As I said, it's a good compromise between performance and economy. Nothing in particular to.look for other than the cambelt change and DSG service at 40k miles, if it's a DSG. The 2.0 CR is reliable (touch wood)
As I said try both and see what you prefer.

Ive also had an offer from a close friend of mine, he said he would sell me his MK7 2013 1.4 TSI GT, Tungsten Silver with loads of extras incl Pano roof for £9500, he no's he could get the best part of £11k for it. I don't no what to do
2.0 TDI Scirocco -
Power 138 bhp
Top Speed 129 mph
0-60 mph 9 secs
Torque 320 Nm, 236 ft-lb
1.4 TSI GT MK7 Golf -
Power 138 bhp
Top Speed 131 mph
0-60 mph 8.1 secs
Torque 250 Nm, 184 ft-lb
I currently drive a 1.6 FSI Mk5 Golf, which has not let me down once in the 3 years ive had it.
Edit: Think ill just stick with getting the scirocco as i plan to get my mk7 GTi next year anyways, so ill get to enjoy the scirocco before moving on to the MK7.

Well I'd go for the diesel Scirocco because it's got more torque, performance difference is minimal, it'll be far better on fuel & road tax is cheap.
I'm on my second Roc TDI now & have been very happy with both (I do drive a TDI Passat for work so maybe I'm biased with diesels!)

Do you reckon? i've had mixed response from my family. The missus wants to take the golf as its got more tech. I'm leaning more towards to scirocco, for its sportier looks.
Got until Tuesday and i have to make my mind up, I've seen a decent Scirocco for sale... 1 owner car with full service history.. 140BHP version not the 170 unfortunately
decisions decisions

Scirocco is based on MK5/6 Golf and getting a bit long in the tooth so a MK7 Golf is quite a step forward both in refinement and tech. If these are important to you then the MK7 Golf may be a better option plus the build quality is a bit better.

I would say yes but the choice is yours:-)
Aesthetics aside, there is nothing the Scirocco is better at than the Golf MK7. As much as I like my Rocco things have moved on...
Just my opinion though...

Have you actually checked insurance quotes for the 2.0 tsi? I love mine, I'm 22 and insurance was 600 quid for me!
