Scirocco Central

I'm saving for a Scirocco but cant decide which one. Coming from a Audi TT mk1 my mpg is 17mpg around town 30ish if im lucky on the motorway to be honest i'd like to get better mpg Which is better the 2.0 TFSI petrol or the TDI 170. I love the economy of a diesel but are they as good as the petrol when it comes to performance . I 'll will be going dsg. and could anyone post how much real life mpg there getting in the both thanks.

Which is better?

It really depends on the mileage and how the car is being used on whether diesel or petrol is better.

If you are doing a high mileage and longish journeys then that suits a diesel whereas short journeys, lots of town driving suits a petrol.

I have a diesel 170 manual and average 50-55 mpg.

I chose the 2.0 tsi (210ps) over the diesel with similar power

I do 10-12k miles a year

I'm getting 35-36mpg avg over a few thousand miles with a mix of town, a road and motorway journeys

Previously owned a diesel which gave me 45-48mpg with the same driving

I worked out that for me the petrol car was cheaper for up to 8 years of ownership, then after that the diesel became more economical (based on car purchase price, tax, fuel costs, insurance and servicing)

I drive a 140 Diesel, and for me, I get around 50mpg on average 60 miles a day all motorway I do next to 0 town driving. my old mk4 Golf GTI 1.8T which is a sim engine to the mk1 TT wouldn't go past 30mpg on the same run.

It depends entirely on the driving you are doing.

If it's majority motorway then get the petrol.

If it's more town driving or leisure then get the petrol.

I prefer the diesel so I went for one of those.

I went for the 2.0 tsi because I'm only doing around 8k miles a year after moving closer to work. Mpg isn't amazing but at the same time I'm not the most economical driver. Drove down to London from Derby the other day and I was averaging about 37 mpg on the way down and about 34 on the way back, was going a bit quicker coming back up though.

On short drives around town probably get around 25 mpg. Think my average since I've bought the car is about 27 but I don't do much motorway driving.

Absolutely love it though and wouldn't of wanted to of chose the diesel but that's just my preference.

Buddy of mine went from a 2.0 petrol Audi TT to a diesel scirocco because he couldn't afford the fuel and he hates it but again that's his preference.

Maybe try get a test drive in each of the two and see which you prefer, I always go to an available car to test drive cars but have never actually bought from them

There's no doubt diseasel pump prices and car tax will go up shortly because you are poisoning the air. Don't be selfish, accept you will get slightly less mpg and don't kill little babies and old people. Not having to drive a car that sounds like a taxi, pumps out black smoke, covers your hands in shite when you fill up and is sluggish compared to a petrol is a bonus!

All very well knocking the diesel motorist - but

what no-one seems to mention is just what are they going to do about DIESEL TRAINS..... ! Quite a lot of them throughout the country !

Yes - the future is not diesel for sure, as mentioned above, depends on your requirements mileage etc, but diesel will become less popular in the years to come. Petrol is coming back big time.

I heard alot things happening about diesel cars like Shit happening in April? Is it ture? And what?

Nothing is happening with diesel cars in the near future and when it does happen it will be the older ones that do not comply with EU5 or EU6 that will be targeted first. Just a lot of hot air going around at the moment.

Nope but the VW debacle has been used as leverage in giving diesel's bad press.

There is nothing we know now that we didn't know over a decade ago when the government decided to use CO2 as a measure for taxation which would favour diesels over petrol. It"s older diesels without DPFs that are" dirty"

If you go for petrol avoid the ones with the old timing tensioner so buy a newer one then MY 2012 or with the tensioner update. There a lot of examples on this forum of expensive 2.0 tsi engine rebuilds. Also the coil packs are failing quit much and about the spark plugs is also usefull information written.
