So went in to VW to see about getting my App connect activated on my 2016 R-line apparently it's 260 quid and takes half a
day, I'm finding this very difficult to believe, has anyone else had any experience with this or know anywhere else to get it
done where you're not getting completely ripped off?
Cheers

Hi,
I've just been quoted £215.00 and about an hours installation. I am sure they are taking the piss and hoping to get an hours service cost in for nothing. My understanding is they are going to enter a code which they buy from parts. How can it take an hour to install a code? I am going to ask for a run down of everything they do purely because I think they are at it. Mind you, they managed to deliver my car without its R badge on the front and when they did get the part, its the one for the back. The product knowledge is appauling as well. Guess who my franchise is???

Did they try to sell you a cable? I think this might be it..
That's just an MDI lead, this isn't what APP connect is, in a 16 plate, that's something completely different.

Have seen this in my computer, suspected they'd try and charge an arm and a leg for it.
In a similar vein, has anyone given their car their home wifi details? What advantage does it give you?

Honestly I don't know but I've heard the car tries to use yours a WIFI hostpot or via bluetooth to get data.. I don't like that idea. nothing uses my data unless I say so!

This is part of the probelm! No one at VW has a clue how it works or what I need to connect. The VW video's I watched suggested either a usb or MDI connection. I think/hope it only uses data if you want (for whatever mad reason) use your own satnav or download songs etc. I only really want to control my phone so I can use google play music. I dont want to download anything. This is just stupid really. This should be a no brainer.
ill have a dig around on GPS underground and such see if I can unearth what's actually being done. whether its hardware or software
hmm from what I can tell the Apple method might need the cable to mirorlink, leveraging the USB, Android doesn't need a cable, unless this is just some form of MHL lead. like this http://www.samsung.com/uk/mobile-access ... l-3-hn910/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cool Technane! I'll dig around as well. The port in my R is indeed a plain old USB 2 port so no need for an MDI as you say! I cant imagine why VW would have gone for a data only model for Android......but.....yeah, worth looking into. Yeah, i had a look at that review. Most of what they demo is of no interest to me. I'm really only interested in controlling music from google play music Cant believe there is such a disconnect on this. Why have VW been so obtuse????? They really need to spend some brain power on this.

Yeah wouldn't surprise me, but I haven't seen it in action to gauge! best bet I can do is go to VW dealer and sit in the R they have there and resist buying the bloody thing! see what happens when I hook up my phone!

Google Drive - is nothing to do with driving. It provides storage on the cloud similar to include.

Well aren't I lucky, bumped into a VW tech. Silly man had a VW polo on and his name lol!
anyway, I asked this question is app connect a Software add-on or a Hardware addon.
He didn't actually know but thought something like that would only be software, but if it was hardware it would only be a control module nothing major.
I know that doesn't help much but info is info!

OK had another search, this is only on MIB2 which is only on MY2016 models so if you don't got MIB2 its like a 2k upgrade!
Actually 2015 facelift rather than MY2016 (or is that the same?) Mines September 2015 and has Discover media and App Connect. It was an option (£125 rings a bell but it was 18 months ago). Used it once in the first week to see what it was about and haven't bothered since.

Dunno m8 just turfing out the information I found ... MY2016 might refer to the Golf, not the ROC so again not sure.

My car was registered in mid 2015 but sat in a showroom until a few weeks ago. Apparently I need an upgrade of some kind before they can install App-Connect onto my infotainment system. The odd thing is, I can see the option in the menu. I can see the app-connect logo pre install if that makes sense. Anyway, took another afternoon off to get it installed. 3 hours later they tell me my system needs an upgrade (they don't know what the upgrade consists of) before they can install app-connect. Total bunch of amateurs at my dealer.
