Wow - that must've been scary! That is really not good news, and doesn't exactly inspire confidence in VW's build quality! I hope you get the car back in working order soon.

I'm in Renfrewshire, but travel down your way fairly regularly as my in-laws are in Law! I'll keep an eye out for the Stealth 'Rocco and give you a flash. Please do likewise if you see my grey R - though sadly I'm more likely to be in the family-friendly Ford Focus!

Man, no steering at all - that's a new one.

Still coulda bought a Vauxhall and be running away from a raging inferno.......does sound like a QC issue where someone hasn't tightened up a bolt.

I wouldn't worry too much - it will be something simple and the fix simple and permanent.
They should however give you compensation for something so serious, make sure they do.

How bizarre! Given that this is a new car, direct from the dealership I'd raise merry hell!

Depends on how far you want to take it really, but if you push it you may find yourself quite nicely off for your trouble. Contact VW UK directly and get them on side, if the dealership you bought the car from is franchised then Vdub will lean on them to make things happen.

Last thing they're going to want is 'VW forget to attach steering wheel' hitting the press, even if it is a bizarre one-off!

Fingers crossed you'll have no further gripes with the Rocco!

Could have very easily been fatal, and because of that i would expect a gold plated polo and a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate.......but knowing VW they will turn around and say 'You get NOTHING! - you broke the rules!, good day sir!'

That's what i like to hear!...i played nice and fair with a genuine warranty claim under extended warranty on my dsg box, and my local VW dealership tried to screw me over - big mistake!

I doubt you would get more than a free service or a gift voucher to use on accessories.
You didnt even nearly die so have no case for compensation.
To say it could have been serious doesnt really count.
As said above the fix will be simple and permanent I'm sure.
Although congratulations on being the first "no steering " ive ever heard lol :-)

Yes it could have been fatal if it happened at 80mph on the motorway but....guess what...he wasn't on the motorway.
So the "compensation" will be in line with the impact it caused.

I would expect courtesy car if not already provided and maybe I'd push for a free service or two. I certainly wouldn't go round slagging them off or slandering them in the press with your "big and important" contacts.

I suspect the fault is something to do with the steering joint where it goes into the power steering rack.
If it's not hitting lockstops (you said it just turns and turns and turns with no effect on the wheels) then it would have disconnected from the rack or had an internal fault on the rack itself for example the joint breaking. This would not be covered in the PDI by the dealer (so they would not be negligent) and I suspect would have been a fault from the factory in terms of not torquing a bolt or a failed part.

Very weird as I said in 7 years have not came across this fault! Intriguing

Let everyone know what the issue turned out to be. I've had my new car for a couple of weeks now and I'm wondering if it is a missing bolt or something then is it missing from mine.
