TDi 140 vs 170

Post by DrNytol »

I've decided to buy a Scirocco diesel with DSG and leather and just have a couple of questions regarding the differences between the 140 and 170 engines apart from the obvious 30bhp increase.

Am i correct in thinking that they have the same engine 'just' a slightly bigger turbo and engine management software ?

Are the brakes bigger on the 170 ?

I see some cars advertised as CR and/or GT now through searching here i've found out that CR stands for common rail and that they're all CR but is what does the GT spec provide or are they all GT. The only obvious thing i've noticed are GT's have the Interlagos wheels.

Also do all Rocco's have bluetooth connectivity for pairing with a mobile phone or does that depend on the head unit ?

Apologies for the noob questions :)

Bluetooth was a cost option up until the end of 2011, after which it became standard.

Yes the 170 has larger front discs (312mm)

If I remember correctly GT gives you 18" Interlagos wheels, tinted rear windows, RCD510, MFSW and Highline. All 170s are GT or higher spec. 140s I'm not sure as I never considered one. You due get Bluemotion tech with some 140s. More information in the Roccopedia section.

Plenty of 140s around, 170s are a bit rarer.

Bob is spot on as usual...

140's are easy to find and pretty common as most were company / lease cars due to low tax when new ...

170 has bigger turbo, injectors and bigger brakes ... certainly worth finding one but they do hold their money well compared to 140's ... iirc the 170's were only available from late 2009/2010 so all have the high line and MFSW? I don't think I've seen a 170 with non-highline.

Leather makes an enormous difference to the cabin ...

Decide what is important to you and then find what you want. Neither is 'wrong' ... both good options.

I've noticed that the 177 is coming down in price now, they are very economical and have more torque, agree with other posts that leather makes all the difference. All are common rail.

Very little in it between a 170 and 177 mind and they map to same figures.

If you want to go over 200bhp then buy a 170/177bhp.
But you can also choose to remap a 140 bhp you get around 180 bhp and 380 nm.
Fuel consumption 56 mpg with normal driving.
And remapping the dsg is also an option i really prefer.
I thought the 170/177 also has xenons standard so that i something to think about, its very expensive to install afterwards.

No, they were an option on the 170 GT.

They may have been standard on the GTS or R-Line, I'm not sure.

Many thanks for the replies, the information is really useful :D

I've been trawling the 'net for most of the day on Autotrader etc and with my budget i'm initially looking for a TDi 170 2009/10 DSG, leather and less than 50k probably in rising blue.

Is there anything in particular that I should be looking out for ? Any common issues with this model ?

What kind of fuel economy will I be looking at ? 50mpg ?

That's basically what I have... but manual. I'm not a fan of DSG.

Common issues:

- check air con... the centre bolt can come loose / shear which means clutch doesn't work, hence no air con.
- check boot lid for corrosion on inner lip (where the plastic plugs are...) - this is a design fault. I had a new tailgate put on mine under warranty.
- check headlights carefully... they delaminate on the inside if been used as DRL's (you can turn this off in VCDS)
- check DDC works... some need a software update

That's about it really. :)

Economy... average 45-47mpg...

Remap gives another 2-3mpg as less throttle required for same effort. Transforms the car as well.

Rear tyres suffer from sawtooth wear pattern that can give drone / rumbling at certain speeds. Sounds like a wheel bearing on the way out.

Because of the relatively high torque some people's driving style can give the clutch and front tyres a hard time.

Cambelt interval is 140K miles / 5 years.

Injectors are the same.
Cambelt is 80k / 4 years (same as every vw has been for last 15 years)
-although on this subject it can vary annoyingly, they say every 4 years up to MY10 and 5 years after. but in america it's every 6 years or 120k, but in uk it's generally 4 years 80k... i would stick with 80k/4 years as also waterpump changes .
170 turbo is a bit stronger as it's billet turbine.
also 170 has chrome exhaust tips
as others say have 312mm brakes but both 288mm and 312 brakes are crap tbh lol.

I never get why people say that... I've got 312mm brakes and with decent pads / fluid on my GT170 and they are more than enough for fast road driving.

If tracking yes would upgrade but for road work they are perfect.

I found them crap. I put on the Aston calipers before I even had any engine tuning they were that bad.
Completely lacking in confidence when you have experienced decent brakes before haha

I've driven some very high end cars so I do like my brakes... mine are absolutely fine. Sounds like yours were in poor condition.

6 month old fluid and OEM pads and discs done by VW.
As I said if you've used good brakes in the past they are lacking.
Especially if you left foot brake etc they are not the best. IMO of course if you're happy that's cool :)
