Scirocco Central

Looks like I have had extremely bad luck with my Scirocco which I purchased October last year. It is a 2010 2.0 TSI model, and has now done £65k.

I went to start it one morning at the weekend, it turned over once then sounded like something went. It was then turning over quickly and not starting. Called the AA out who said there was no compression, and it was likely the timing chain had slipped, he had seen it before.

So got him to tow me to a local garage who I have been recommended to. They have had a look at it today, and confirmed the worst. Until they strip it properly, they can't confirm how much damage has been done.

The garage have recommended I contact VW, as this is a known fault with certain models. However, I bought this car from independent dealer, with short 3 month warranty. Does anyone think I am likely to get any help from VW?

I asked the garage what he think the worst case scenario would be, and he said £1000-£1200 to completely strip and rebuild with necessary parts. I was actually surprised by this, didn't sound too bad. I was expecting £2k,£3k or even £4k.

After reading the forums sounds like the tell tale for this issue is rattling at cold start. I did notice a slight rattle for less than a second every now again, but I didnt think much of it. Really regret not looking into it now

Completely put me off ever spending a considerable amount of money on a second hand car. This was a big deal for me, and I worked hard to buy it. Such crap luck

Sorry you have had this problem. As you have found out it is an issue with mainly 2009 and 2010 2.0 TSI engines. The timing chain tensioner has been redesigned a couple of times and a revised chain fitted at some point. The Mk6 golf has the same engine. Wish I had done more research before buying the car Mechanic is stripping the engine down tomorrow to assess the damage.

Ive recently had this issue, the tensioner failed causing 4 bent valves basically. I didnt even bother asking VW apart from buying certain parts to fix/replace.
Luckily I have a well equipped and knowledgable mate who I am fixing it with who will charge small labour fees.

Hopefully the damage is as minimal as mine so you can fix it relatively cheaply. Otherwise it may need a new engine or complete rebuild. Thats alot of time and monies
