Engine doesn't shut off until key is removed

Hi all,

I noticed yesterday that the engine was still running after turning the key all the way back to the starting position. It didn't cut out until I removed the key completely.

I just removed the factory fitted stereo and installed an Alpine unit, but I can't imagine that would cause this...

Suggestion?

Do a scan with vcds maybe you can find some fault codes. Ignition switch can be mallfunctioning. Don't think it's the air shut off valve because the engine stops when you remove the key. Do the headlight main beams stay on when you turn the key?

I've read of this before and it was also after a stereo was retro-fitted.

I wonder if you've accidentally linked 12V accessory to 12V ignition (assuming they are separate circuits to begin with?)

The car definitely differentiates between ignition off and key out (for instance, side lights will stay on until the key is removed). So that might explain why the engine only stops when the key is removed.

Check all your 12V wiring.

Halfords being the common denominator in both cases :-)

Glad you got sorted.

'Halfords tech' - a nationwide automotive plague deserving of a VOSA recall, whereby the 'techs' are withdrawn from the market and put into more suitable positions, such as washing floors or the advanced ones can have a go on the till.

I wouldn't let them change a light bulb let alone start messing with the electrical systems!

Some people who work at Halfords are very good. My friend worked at Halfords for a while (he's moved on since) and he has done all my audio work on 2 cars and the jobs are spot on.

Even the sun shines on a dogs arse some days :D

...but yeah, like everything not everyone is a complete idiot just someone who works at halfords usually is not qualified to be messing with pretty much anything in a modern car, e.g the number of people i see driving round with their light bulbs not fully engaged into the socket so they are pointing up and blinding you, i know of at least 2 that were done at halfords and i would bet many more are out there!
