Has anyone had their paint repaired? Options??

Hello,
Basically my black scirocco is covered in motorway stone chips on the front, and a few nasty door chips from careless previous owners.
I'm wondering what my options are in regards to repairing these? Do the paint pens work, or is getting a professional on the job the way to go?
Cheers

Don't use paint pens. They're rubbish and getting a decent finish is an art to master.
My car was hit when parked and I got the chap who re sprayed it to fill in the stone chips whilst he was at it. Can't tell there were ever any there.
The paint on these modern VW's is terrible. It's so thin and soft. Your car will constantly keep getting covered in them im afraid.

Yeah - antoher forum I posted on said the same - paint pens are out!
Maybe i'll get a quote to give it a "go over" - im sure it'll come in somewhere between "more than i'm willing to pay" and "f--k me thats expensive"

Ive been looking into this recently and there is a tread on the detailing forum where people have had perfect results using this, so basically you buy the paint, not touch up pen and add a fine layer to the chip, wait for it to dry for an hour or two, then add more until the chip is filled up and just above the paint surface, then wet sand the spot down so its level with the rest of the paint, then polish with a DA polisher, ill find the thread it looks really good, ill be trying this in a few weeks

That's what my paint chap did. obviously he's a pro, and paint can be tricky (particularly metallic) but you can't tell any of the chips were ever there.
It's worth noting however that atmospheric conditions have a big impact on how paint sets. It's not something for doing outside on the drive.
