Dash Cam

I've got a Transcend 220 dash cam and would like to hardwire in our 2013 R-Line using the spare cable I have which has the cigarette lighter plug on one end which I appreciate I may need to cut off. I wanted to do this because there are times when I want to use the socket for Sat Nav or to charge phone and her in the kitchen doesn't like me using adapters.
Anyhow my question is, is this a fairly simple job to do and I would very much appreciate any advice or instructions on how to.
Thanks for any help.

I have tried to use the power socket for my camera but it will not function properly because it still has some power (not 12v) when the ignition is switched off!

I use the socket in the boot and ran the wire the length of the car. I take my camera down when I leave the car though it's just for driving (don't want to encourage anyone to break in and steal anything by leaving on display) works fine for me.

Thanks Greg, shows what I know, I didn't even know there was a socket in the boot.

You can hardware using a piggy back fuse thing but I just thought I would use the socket and see how I got on first. Seems to have done me ok.

If you were to leave your camera plugged in to the 12v whilst the car is not been used for a few days could this drain the battery? And is there anyway of switching it off completely when the car is not used? Tar

Even with the ignition switched off, there is a residual voltage present at the 12V sockets so if you leave anything plugged in there is a risk of a flat battery.

Thanks, I am guessing there is no way of turning this off completely without taking the fuse out?

Not that I'm aware of and I don't even think there is a dedicated fuse.

There are plenty of circuits on the car which are ignition switched.
Many dashcam companies sell specific wiring kits.
