Hey guys,

But if a strange one here and wondering if anyone can help identify this noise.
When I first heard it I thought I had run over a cat! Haha
I'm not sure if it's an alternator bearing, so just wondering if anyone else had experience of this.
It only makes this noise when the engine is warm.

2009 2.0 TSi

Thanks in advance

Ah the old duck in the engine noise! - always makes me laugh when i hear this one.

Its more than likely your PCV valve, you'll need to replace it.

Still could be worse...

Haha! It's not quite that loud yet!

I've looked at some videos on YouTube of PCV Valve and not sure if that is it.
Thanks though it's something I can ask the garage to look at!

Really bugging me

I'm pretty confident its the PCV valve/breather....the later mk5 TSI engines made the exact same noise and every time it was the PCV valve/breather - VW would replace both to fix the issue.

Just an update, finally got round to having VW fit a new PCV/breather.

Roughly after 10 miles driving the duck noise came back.

Going back in tomorrow, maybe something with the intake manifold?

Will keep this updated

So then guys, I've had the intake manifold changed. Guess what? The noise is still there! So that's the PCV and Intake Mani and it hasn't resolved the issue.

They're now thinking it may be the water pump?
Can anyone shed any light on this if they've had a water pump change?

It's something I can ask about mate cheers.

I've never heard a noise like this from a water pump, so I am doubting it's that :/

I remember slightly similar issues with a couple of mates that had Audi's and think one was a diverter valve and another was a torn/leaking pipe (sorry can't remember which area/pipe it was which isn't much use).

The diverter has been changed mate which is what a lot of people have said it was.

I'll check for a pipe leak. Thanks!

Really bugging me as I failing water pumps usually have more of a whine than this.

Yeah I associate a water pump to be a whine like noise as you say. That noise to me sounds like it is what you get with air being forced through or across something but not always the case.

I'm questioning whether they changed the breather hose now.
It sounds identical with that on the link above. The only difference between mine and his is the breather was changed.

Update:
So guys just in case anyone is following this..

The garage have assured me that the noise is the water pump and that's in the process of being changed. After researching, I found on the Golf Mk 6 forum that it's a well known issue to have an animal in your engine [emoji854].

We did have a bit of drama today though with the mechanic shearing the bolt holding the pulley to the balance shaft!
They quoted £1600 to take the engine out completely to get access as the design of the crank case is sh*t, with. It clearance to drill or spark erode the bolt out!

Anyway, I did not accept the charge and an hour later to my relief the bolt was out!

Ah well, I get the car back tomorrow. Fingers crossed, without the small animal under the bonnet!
