Private reg help

The story. Im picking up a car on Friday and have a private reg to put on it.. I've also just bought the plate so it's not on a car right now.
The question is, what's the easiest and quickest way to get the plate on the car?
I've searched through the dvla website but it's not very clear.
From what I can see I'll have to wait for the V5 to come through before?
Has anyone done this recently?
Any info appreciated

You can't do anything without that or the V5. Best to wait until they both arrive then it's a simple task to complete and return both to DVLA at the same time.

My wife bought mine for Christmas & all I had to do was go online with a code or something then I could put it on. Guessing the Mrs had done the rest when she bought it

You can do that if you have the most recent V5, but as I'll have to send the V5 away for the name change I can't use that code unfortunately.
There is a way to do it with green 'new keeper' slip but it's not very clear on the dvla website.
I'll maybe phone and see if they can clear it up!
