Well I think I have to face facts. The 110 miles a day I do is going to hurt my pocket in the TSI.

So I am going to change it

Anybody got a TDI that they wish they could change for a TSI?

If no, I will take it a dealer and no doubt get bent over on price for a TDI swap. DAMNIT.

I went from a 170tdi Leon FR to this 2.0tsi, and while the fuel prices were so different between petrol and derv a couple of months ago, I wasnt really noticing any differnce in my pocket.

I've done 21k miles in 8 months, Im glad I didnt wait for the diesel, couldnt imagine the roco with a derv engine to be honest, and you'll loose a fortune at trade in.

Just had my 1st service on variable, £166 so im happy, and its doing 34mpg (indicated).

If you drive the tdi the way a scirocco should be driven, instead of constantly searching for MPG, you'll see 39/40mpg in the tdi, that was my average for 60k miles in the leon. Drive it steady, and you'll see 45ish.

I had a 170TDI Golf and rarely dipped below 44mpg, HDI - you must have been caning that Leon on a permanent basis!

The TDI will have the best Scirocco residuals according to the experts (not by much), just look at What Car's running costs calculator (for which depreciation plays a large part). To a lot of people, having moderate performance and high economy is better than having great performance ad poor economy (unless you're on the track more than you're on the road with all those cameras watching).

I bought my TDI to keep my license clean and get good economy, all wrapped up in a great car. There's coppers difference between a metallic painted TDI GT and a solid paint 2.0TSI, people with TDI's have obviously made a decision to not get spanked at the pumps on a weekly basis.

I just got 57mpg average on an 80mile round trip doing 80mph on dual carriageways for most of it - and it's not even completely run in yet (900 miles on the clock), not exactly driving like miss daisy.

I wouldn't swap mine for a 2.0TSI - sorry S&N. Hope you find someone to sort you out, but you will save loads when you rack up the miles.

At least I don't feel so bad about it now with my 11k in 8 months!

I do between 120 -150 miles a day. I work in construction so work all over, it was a big decision for me after my last 5 cars being derv, to swap to this.

As I said above, Im happy with the choice and in my opinoin the scirocco just wouldnt be the same without the petrol engine, and I dont mean straight line speed, as I doubt there would be that much in it.

More the noise, the fact the TSi loves to be revved and has such a flat torque curve, and the control the throttle gives whilst cornering, where maybe in a derv the engine would be asking for, say 3rd gear. I think it was autocar described the 2.0tsi as pretty much the best of the bunch.

With regards to the loss at trade in, I meant the loss you'd make on the TSi trading in so soon against a new TDi, outweighing the savings you'd make on fuel over time.

As I said im glad I didnt wait for the TDi, but thats with hindsight, if they had both been available when I bought the TSi, I would have probably gone for a TDi, as the other car I was looking at was a 123d Coupe.

Someone who's had a performance petrol, but has swapped due to hearing great things about the TDI, and now regrets it, and doesn't do any mileage to justify having the TDI. I did read about someone on the VW Audi forum who bought a 140TDI Golf GT after having a Ford Focus ST and wondered why he was disappointed with the Golf after going from 225ps to 143ps.

If you got 48mpg out of the 2.0TSI, no one would buy a TDI - it's a pity that VAG can't shoehorn that 211ps 2.0TFSI Valvelift engine from the A4/A5 into the Scirocco, I had hoped a while back that it'd be the MK6 Golf GTI engine, but it apparently won't fit under the bonnet (or the Scirocco's).

HDI is right about the depreciation if you trade now. If you're going to lose say, 2 grand in the swap, and having a TDI will save you £600 a year in fuel, you won't be any the worse off running that 2.0TSI for 3 years.

If your 2.0TSI gets you 35mpg over your daily 110 miles,and a 2.0TDI got you 50mpg over the same trip, then, at 100p/L for unleaded (unless you use RON98) or 102p/L Diesel, you'd save £1022.50 a year with the TDI.

If you get 40mpg with the TSI, vs 50mpg with the TDI, the saving is £573.75 per year with the TDI.

Both figures are based upon commuting 250 days in the year.

The fuel savings might not outweigh the hammering at the dealership (unless you can wangle a swap).

I've got to say, as someone who's changed cars 4 times in the last 2 years, the dealer margins really hurt your pocket!

Seriously, as the others say, the savings will be marginal over the next 2 years. Even if it ends up costing you £200 quid extra per year over 3 years (all fuel and dealer costs in consideration), surely you'll have a more enjoyable time driving the petrol every day, with it's throaty roar, rather than the diesel. (Sorry diesel owners, but you have to agree on that one ).

If you had no car and had to choose, then TDI makes sense, but in your situation it's certainly a much closer call! Get a spreadsheet out and do all the maths and see whether it's worth it...
