Sorry, if this seems a jumbled mess but pretty pee'd off about it.

My car is suffering from wheel arch rust.

Back in July I took my car in to local warranty bodyshop for photographs etc to be sent off to VW. I was told 3-4 weeks and waited, and waited, and waited. Eventually in february I was put through to the girl dealing with warranty, she'd look into it. She then got back to me saying chasis number photo's weren't taken if I could head back to garage to get those. Off I went when I could. I managed 27th Feb (i think). Just last week she emailed me asking for more details (why the delay?) so she can send off my claim to VW. Today, less then 2 working days later, I finally receive a response:

"I have completed the reports required by Volkswagen regarding the paint defects you have reported on the nsr & osr wings of your car.

As the defects do not fall in to the Vw Anti Perforation Warranty Criteria I have applied for factory goodwill contribution towards repairing the paintwork on both the nsr & osr wings of your car. The outcome is as follows:-

NSR & OSR wings - There is a factory goodwill contribution of 50% parts & labour towards repairing each of the rear wings of your car, however the remaining 50% parts & labour would have to be met by yourself, I have calculated this as £209.78 + vat = £251.74 for the nsr wing and £75.54 + vat = £90.64 for the osr wing.

The VW Anti Perforation Warranty Criteria is that only through corrosion originating from within is covered by warranty after 3 years as per the limits detailed in the Complete Warranty Guide. "

As you can imagine I beyond happy that something that should have been done sooner, was finally answered within 2 working days, if it was done correctly in the first place. The email also contradicts itself that if they're willing to pay to repair the paint then it's a corrosion issue not a perforation issue. And that any decent inspection that should have been carried out will realise, that due to a known fault, that the rust is coming from inside the wheel arch where the lining is.

I'll draft up a response to her (and the boss) and possibly post it for guidance, but anything you guys would recommend or advice?

I had the same issue ... For a claim on a rusty tailgate ... Post up on Twitter / Facebook at your displeasure with pictures with the way the matter has been dealt with ... They hate media presence ... I got my claim of goodwill turned into 100% ...

Keep at it. They WILL give in!

Absolutely upset and outraged. '58 plate scirocco is suffering rust on the wheel arches due and should be covered under the 12 year corrosion warranty. After 7months of waiting and mess ups from my local dealer Western Volkswagen you guys have offered a 50% "good will gesture." The rust is a known issue due to poor design of wheels arches across the range, making them effectively defective from new. There are now leaked internal bulletins have been sent out to dealers and staff advising to offer a standard "goodwill gesture" procedure. Absolutely outraged at my treatment and Volkswagen yet again in an other cover up! I noticed at the weekend that I have the same issue.

Nope. "VW HQ" refused to budge and admittedly gave up chasing them. I had a seperate complaint to the dealer about how they dealed with the situation and they upped the offer to 75% good will. Still not what i really wanted but still better than what it was.

I had a 25th Anniversary Golf prior to my current Scirocco; rust bubbling on the wheel arches. Given that the car was 12 years old at the time I enquired, they dealt with it no problem - 2 brand new front wings, sprayed and blended & free of charge under VW corrosion warranty.

I went through Inchcape Volkswagen, found them to be more than accommodating! The 'bumph' around the repair was that they'd take ownership of anything that was not caused by damage to the bodywork (So rust on a scratched area = no for example). They did a full inspection of the vehicle to make sure that there were no further problem areas, completed the work within about 2 -3 days as I remember.

If theyre dragging their feet, pull up the full T&C of the the 12 year bodywork warranty, cross reference them with the nature of the rust found on your car and ask them the question 'why' if they wont commit to it 100%.

All current Volkswagen vehicles are fully protected during manufacture against through corrosion for 12 years from the date of first registration.

The only preconditions are:

-The defect must be reported to a member of the Volkswagen Authorised Repairer network as soon as it is discovered and within the warranty period.
-The perforation must not have been caused originally by damage, neglect, insufficient care or maintenance or by external corrosion (rusting).
-A member of the Volkswagen Authorised Repairer network must be advised about any rusting as soon as it is found.
-All body repairs will be carried out promptly in accordance with the manufacturer's specification and procedures, using only approved parts and materials, so the original level of anti-corrosion protection is maintained.
