Seen someone had one of these through a post on facebook yesterday. Just wondering if its actually as good as it sounds?. With it making more of a difference than a stage 1 map and it being semi permanent as it can easily be unplugged. thanks

Looked at getting one myself but decided against it. A map is a better option as it's reprogramming everything to work in tandem. These tuning boxes, I believe, are one of those plug ins that trick sensors into thinking the car is running differently and makes them overfuel.

What is it you mean by overfuel, I'm not completely sure hows these work so don't want to take a risk and spend that much when i could just get it mapped. Also if its over fueling do you know how would it be more economical in terms of mpg like it states it is? thanks

Just get it mapped. The tuning boxes are just a resistor in an expensive plastic box which fools the ecu into thinking there's less fuel getting into the engine than there actually is, so it forces more in above it's limit. That's probably what the reported mpg gains are from, the ecu will be miscalculating how much fuel is getting into the engine, so it will think it's achieving better performance with less fuel, so on your MFD the MPG figure will be higher (and innacurate) due to it making the calculations with the wrong figures - if that makes sense.

That might not be 100% correct just what I remember off the top of my head.

There's plenty of info online about these tuning boxes and how they work, likewise remaps. Have a proper read up before you come to a decision. If the extra cost for a remap isn't an issue though, I'd say there's not much deciding to do.

Being close to their HQ in Chelmsford, I went to TDI-Tuning to have a Diesel Tuning Box fitted to my Scirocco (170 GT TDI).

The CR2 Twin box sits between your fuel and boost sensors and essentially changes the amount of fuel / boost in your engine without your ECU really knowing what it's doing...
This meant my MFD was showing me False MPG's and on average the fuel consumption was about the same.

After having the box fitted, I had issues whereby the Glow Plug light would turn on on the dash and i'd lose boost all together with the car going into limp mode, this happened to me randomly but caused issues with my commute to work.
This happened no matter what type of pre-defined map I chose from it.

After a few issues and seeing the guys there several times, they didn't refund me with the problems that I had, they told me that my car had already been remapped and this is why I was having problems (unsure whether this is true or not) they seem more like salesmen then they do mechanics.

Either way, they gave me an ECU remap instead and as they didn't have a rolling road, I guess I got a "known good" working remap. I can't tell you what BHP/Lb Ft i'm getting as they didn't have a Dyno and the car hasn't been on one (scared to see if it's worse then it feels!)

It's been about a year now with the new ECU remap and i've not had any issues with the car whatsoever, MPG's have increased by about 5mpg on motorway driving and power delivery is a lot more fierce from around 2300rpm to about 4,200rpm.

My friend recently got his BMW 123d remapped by BWChipTune in London, and the guys there were doing live tuning on the dyno so was custom to his vehicle. As stated before, I think they've probably had some Map files that work fine with my engine and just roll with it.
