Help needed! Question about current Scirocco lead times

Post by Dr_Doug »

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of buying a Roc - on the scrappage scheme. I negotiated a £1400 discount from the dealer on top of the £2K scrappage. Giving me a rather nice £3400 reduction that is written on the order form (currently sitting on my desk).

Problem is, after looking at some broker sites (drivethedeal.com), and reading round various topics on this form I'm starting to feel decidedly edgy about the likely delivery time. Scrappage scheme requires no longer than 4 months from order to delivery. Dealer assures me that lead time is still 12 weeks....but I'm not convinced.... :?

What have you guys heard? Anyone place an order recently? This looks like it might be a £2000k gamble. Its important because I can defo get a Roc on the scrappage from another dealer (they have a cancelled order that has an assigned build week) but they aren't willing to match the £1400 dealer discount.

Any help/advice/opinion welcomed!

Welcome to SC :)

Yep 12 weeks is about right at the moment. There can sometimes be issues with xenons and the pana roof but they seem to have largely been sorted out.

Thanks Kev,

I haven't specified either the Xenons or the sunroof. (Though I was sorely tempted by the roof). So hopefully that won't be an issue anyway.

I guess its just going to be a nervous wait.

I wonder if the dealer can just hold off applying for the Scrappage allowance until a few weeks after the order? If I understand correctly, the issue is that you are assigned your scrappage allowance (from the government fund) at the time of order and this is reserved for you for a period of 4 months - after which time if you haven't taken delivery of your new car your allocated money is simply put back in the fund.

Presumably, this must be possible - say its looking like its not going to make the 4 months... Can't the dealer 'go through the motions of cancelling the order and then submit a 'new' order for the same vehicle? (and hence get a fresh scrappage allowance assigned to the new deal?)

Anyone know if this would work - if needed?

As I understand it the dealer can submit a 'new' scrappage claim for the same vehicle as long as all the scrappage scheme money has not been used up.

These dealers are so smug at the moment, you'd think they'd want to get the cancelled order sold, especially if it is coming in well before the next new plate is due out (assuming you're a UK customer). How close to the £1400 can he get you?

I got £1000 off my dealership swap Scirocco, and £1000 more part ex than the Parkers guide suggests, for a Spec and colour I wanted. I also only had to wait 2 weeks for it. It is still not a great deal, seeing as I was charged post-price rise prices (before discount), whereas this car will have been ordered from VW by the dealer at pre-price rise prices. So most of my £1000 discount was never really there, based on the prevailing list price when the car was originally ordered to build.

So was the recent price rise to cover normal inflationary rises, or to cover extra costs associated with the MY2010 model? The price increase timing coincided with one of the first "order from scratch" dates that would get you a MY2010 model.
