Damage to clutch (bell) housing.

Last few weeks, slight 'whine' noise from gearbox. My local (V.W. trained mechanics) small garage completed a regular service and discovered gerabox oil levels minimum or nil!. A refilled gearbox cured the whine and driving well, but the discovered leaking gearbox needed curing. Next day delivered my Scirocco (2011 2.0 ltr turbo diesel blue motion) to gearbox specalist to inspect. Diagnosis!!!!. The Clutch plate has 'ground into the housing' and caused the oil leak. Cure (I chose) is !... A recon gearbox and new clutch etc. ££££££!!. Any help info on..... 1. Is this a regular fault on Scirocco.? 2. If it's a V.W. design fault is there a V.W. solution? (e.g Technical Safety Bulletin etc), so the modified solution can be fitted. 3. Any clues to what causes this failure?.

Had a similar fail on my Mk4 Golf GTI but that had done over 200k blew a hole out through my bell housing, thankfully it being a MK4 it was far cheaper to find a replacement gearbox.!
