Hi Guys,

My 170GT keeps going into regen daily.. I drive the car on the motorway everyday but at rush hour so don't get to travel very fast for long! The car drive fine and never loses power but does smoke sometimes.. the smoke only comes out when i floor it in 2nd and 3rd gear but seems to clear up quite quickly! the revs seems to hover around 1000RPM until i have cleared it.. I tend to drive in 3rd at 50mph for a while and can feel the car jerk which makes me think the regen has stopped as the revs drop back to normal! How can i make sure the car doesn't regen all the time?

Please help as i hate this happening all the time!

If the regeneration is not completed when you switch the car off the radiator fans will run on for around 5 mins. Are your fans running on?

When my regen light came on I just drive the car at 2500 rpm in 4th for a bit. Till it cleared. You can get dpf cleaners as well that you put in tank. Not sure how effective they are though

Hey mate,

A few times the fan has stayed on but not always! But the revs drop after a 5 min drive on A roads at 50mph! But after a while of town driving or just slow driving in general the revs jump back up! If i turn the car off and on again, the revs drops for a few mins then just jump back up until what i assume is the Regen, is done!

It's not just a regen that can cause the idle to rise. If the battery voltage drops below a specific value it can rise to facilitate charging.

Hook it up on vcds and check soot load, ash volume and dpf pressure difference. You can als see if the regeneration is active.

My car seems to want to hold gears longer when the Revs are higher and it smokes. By that I mean the computer doesn't say change until much later.

That is normal behaviour, it adapts to the throtle. Just check the dpf with vcds and you know some more. Is the dpf light on in your instrument panel?

I'll have to see if my friend can get hold of a VagCom to check for me. No warning at all. Just idles most days at this level. You can also hear the exhaust push out the very hot air which is extremely hot compared to usual Image

That's not a lot of range for that amount of fuel. My car would be showing around 450 miles at least for that amount of fuel.

I have been driving around in a really low gear with high revs for the last day or two to try clear the DPF. It was on around 320 this morning but have done around 45 miles since then. With a full tank it showed around 420 but obviously is the DPF is regenerating then more fuel will be used?

I've done 150miles since the full mark (Monday)

That is low definitely ... I've done 220 miles on mine from full and it's on same indicator as yours ...

How are you guys driving the cars? I'm in slow moving motorway never higher than 40 really at rush hour. May get a good run for a few mins at 50/60. 16 miles to work and 16 back. Rest of the miles are town miles!

I'm commuting from Bolton to Liverpool most days ... Stuck in rush hour, average speed 40-50mph ... Lots of stop / starting ...

Hmmm maybe I'm just being too heavy footed with the car atm to get this DPF to fix up. I have in the past got about 400 from a full tank. Nothing more I don't think. Only second time I have filled up a full tank though. Usually only do half

I'm averaging 500 miles from full tank... Did 520 on the last tank...

400 miles to £55 of fuel to fill up is pretty low chap.

Which fuel are you using? Maybe I should change fuel? I use Texaco.

I just use normal Tesco or Sainsburys diesel in my 170 TDI and can easily get over 550 miles per tank.

That's impressive... I usually get 500-520 ... is yours remapped?
