I'm considering remapping my 1.4 160 . Revo & APR are too expensive for me so I've narrowed it down to Celtic or Quantum tubing. Both seem to be good and reliable.
Quantum will take it to 195 hp & 221 lb ft for £250 where as Celtic is 200 hp & 205 lb ft for £275
Which one would you guys go with, have you had any experience with either companies?
Thanks
which remap?

Re: which remap?
People here usually advise against remapping a 1.4tsi engine, due to its inherent problems.
But if you were to take the risk, I would go with the one with less torque... Just so you are easier on the clutch

Re: which remap?
Same thoughts about clutch...
Celtic are remapping mine to 227bhp / 311lbft (GT170) ... yet most tuners are quoting 205-210bhp but with higher torque figures, I've seen as much as 360lbft... the clutch isn't going to like that longer term!

Re: which remap?
I was going to go with quantum at one point myself, here's something that I came across and I was VERY glad that I did as it made me realise it was a bad idea!
"the price is the first worrying point,
the second is no one has ever heard of them,
the 3rd is that they appear on websites for companies that all look the same with the same web design just different title,
the 4th is that they say theyve been established since 2007 but companies house says 2010 which means they must be called something else, looks like Cit-tech Ltd, who are currently dissolved, but dont worry the website is still running http://cit-tech.quantumtuning.co.uk/...ecu.aspx#intro" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but wait that's the same as quantum's?
Just everything rings alarm bells, over 250 dealers world wide? you mean 250 transit vans pumping out crap maps? http://quantumtuning.co.uk/quantum-dealers.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; look at them all!?
Then compare against the biggest names in the industry and do you notice anything? http://www.goapr.co.uk/dealer/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Its like a type of ecu mapping Spam mail, maybe if you had an problem free car then yeah sure go for it, but I wouldnt risk it"

Also another thread where someones had problems - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index ... ic=90774.0
Now im not saying that everyone who gets a remap from them will have problems. But is it worth the risk when you could spend a bit more money and get a service that you know is going to be professionally done and you wont have to worry about it!
just my 2 cents

Re: which remap?
There are some real 'chipping' scams out there. A mate of mine got done by one where, I think all they did was put some sort of resistor in somewhere which just made the car over fuel.
On a nice and valuable car I wouldn't bother taking any risks. Pay the premium and get it done properly.

I was swaying toward Celtic due to some good reviews on this forum, but liked the look at the higher torque with Quantum. But as everyone is advising against this for the clutch's sake, I think I'll go for Celtic's. Also as they offer a mobile service, its very convenient with work!

Thanks everyone for the help!

Re: which remap?
I'm going to have my 1.4 TSI 160 remapped soon - i'm going to go APR and am just waiting for their discount which they usually offer around this time of year.
As a above, a word of caution with remapping the 1.4 TSI 160 - it's a highly strung engine with a lot of potential issues.
What year car do you have?
-Early 2009 models have dodgy piston rings and i would never remap those ones.
-Anything pre 2012 for CAVD engines in scirocco's would probably have the older injectors which can spray onto the piston crown and exhaust valves - causing scorching and excess heating (leading to potential piston failure)
-It is recommeded you use NGK BKR7EIX spark plugs when remapping. Primarily because they are shorter and sit out of the way of the injector spray. They are also one step colder - this however i have found a problem unless you regularly drive the car hard. Due to them being one step colder, normal driving patterns allow carbon deposits to build up easily on the tips - leading to misfires. If you don't intend to drive the car hard on a regular basis (read hard as wide open throttle), but only give a blast every now and then - then i recommended going for NGK BKR6EIX plugs, they will run better and are still fine for remapping.
-The PCV system on these engines allows a fair amount of oil to pass through direct into the intake manifold, this lowers the octane of the fuel air mixture and can contribute to the misfire problem on these engines.
Another thing to note is that what you may read about this engine (or anything from the VW line), with regards to when a part was superseded - does not necessary apply to your car.
For example the CAVD engine in golfs had the newer injectors from mid 2010 - but VW's ETKA parts database indicates that the scirocco only got the newer ones after march 2012!
Knowing how easy it is to blow up this engine i have taken precautions before my remap and have done the following work, even though i only intend to go stage 1:
-Changed all the injectors to the newer versions (03C906036M)
-Changed all the coil packs to the newer versions that produce a stronger spark (036905715G)
-Upgraded the intercooler with one from a Golf R (superiour to the metal S3 intercooler)
-Custom PCV system with catch can & baffle.
-New sparks - NGK BKR6EIX
You don't have to go this far, but you just have to be cautious with this engine when remapping - the damn things are prone to throwing a piston or misfiring when running stock, let alone remapped.
At the very least you need to get yourself VCDS and before and after the remap, log the misfire counters and see if you are getting a lot of misfires under WOT (full acceleration) - if so then you need to do some or all of the work above.
