RNS 510 help needed

Post by mercules »

I recently bought a 59 plate Scirocco, and i need some info on the head unit in the car

1. The option for DAB radio comes up on the band selection list, but the list just says updating, nothing actually happens. Does this mean a module/aerial needs installing before it can pick up DAB stations? Or am i being impatient and do i need to wait a good few minutes

2. The head unit has a seperate button for 'Phone', although this doesn't seem to do anything. There is a bluetooth module on the dash which i believe is the OEM VW one, and i can connect to this fine.

3. I would like to use bluetooth audio streaming, and although my phone is connected, it won't play through the speakers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello:

1) I am not sure about this as I do not have DAB. The quickest (but not easiest) way to check would be to pull out the unit, and check if there is a connector for a DAB antenna in the rear of the unit.

2) The bluetooth module you have "on the dash" will not work with the RNS510. This is a repackaged unit that does not integrate with the stereo, but is a standalone unit.

3) see above. you are unlikely to have a bluetooth module box installed in your car, so bluetooth streaming is unlikely to be function via your RNS510

it's ok, I have an idea what it is because it was installed in my car too. It's a rebranded bury bluetooth kit. To enable all the features you want (bar DAB), see threads on the forum about bluetooth retrofitting

On later software versions the unit will show DAB on the system but it may not actually be installed. Look for the part number in the hidden developer menu and see if it ends in 680 (non DAB) or 686 (DAB).

Press and hold the "Setup" button and it'll cycle through the first page to the version information page, keep holding the button and after about 10 seconds it will take you to the developer menu. Note, this is only available if the menu has been enabled with VCDS or a software upgrade at some point.

Or you could pull the unit and read the part number on the sticker on top.

I stream by Bluetooth using and iPod mdi cable and a Bluetooth module from Amazon. Works absolutely fine with my iPhone or my Android phone. The Head Unit controls also control my music from my phone.
