Hi Guys

Going to purchase my first ever scirocco end of this month but in 2 minds whether to go for the 2.0 TDI DSG or the manual?

Are there any known problems with either of them that I should look out for, or which is the best to your preference? I'd imagine the DSG would be quite fun to drive with the paddle shift etc.

yes neither of them is a 2.0 TSI

seriously though you should test drive the dsg before you go for it if youve only driven manuals before

I've got the tdi 170 dsg, when moving gear selection is silky smooth and changes are instant but when selecting first or reverse there is a slight hesitation as the car is trying to anticipate which gear you want in a hurry.Other owners with dsg transmission will know what I mean by this. Sport mode is excellent and also the paddles on the wheel are extra toys to play with. As for driving in the snow you can lock it into say first or second by moving the sector to the left then up or down. Servicing of the box is around the 40000 mile mark which is usually oil and filter. There's no real way to explain other than driving one [emoji106]

I had a test drive in a DSG but went for the manual. DSG was silky smooth but I felt like a passenger if that makes any sense? With a manual it feels like your actually driving the car? Ha hope that helps!

I went for DSG. It really seems to suit a diesel engine. I don't have paddles though and in all honesty I believe the car is better for it.

I have ordered a White Scorocco R with the DSG box so I guess I'm biased
Unfortunately don't get to pick it up until early December - but that's another story
Other car is a Skoda Yeti TDI DSG but it doesn't have the paddles you get with the Sciricco
It has never been "caught" in the wrong gear and in traffic it is so much easier - well - it's an automatic

The best way to describe the DSG is that it is the best of both worlds
You can run in "auto" or switch to Tiptronic and use the paddles or just use the paddles to over-ride at any time
Can't get any better than that !!

Yesterday my son and I did the "Volkswagen Driving Experience Progression course" at Lakeside Park, Brisbane
We drove Golf GTI and R as well as the Polo GTI and the Scorocco R
They were all DSGs
When we did the lapping in the Golf GTI and the R, naturally they were in "sports" mode
Well you don't want a manual - it was in the right gear all the time staying around the 4500 to 5000 rpm
just another thing you don't have to worry about as there is plenty going on LOL
and nice throttle blips on the down shifts

Oh, and our other, other car is a Fiat 500 TwinAir with the single clutch "Dualogic" gearbox -
not in the same league as the VW twin clutch but it has the paddles
and without doubt it has to be the most fun car I have driven in the past 30 years
The biggest part of the "fun" factor is the gearbox and the paddles

Anyway that's my 2 cents worth - DSG - go for it

For a petrol, dsg or manual, for a diesel, manual only. imo

I would definatley recommend the manual. Country roads you are engaged and can't compare. Gives the complete driving experience. Just my 2 cent and i'm biased as i turned down the dsg and got the manual rocco r.

I think my the number of replies it's a bit of a hot topic! But I think it comes down to a personal preference.

I had manuals up to now and thoroughly enjoyed them. Now have a 2.0tsi dsg and love it. Only had it 10 months or so but the novelty hasn't worn off yet. Does the job for the daily commute in traffic etc and is so nice and lazy to drive. But when I want a bit of fun and pick the A roads to go home instead I think it is just as involving, if not more, than any manual I've had. Makes nice noises and the speed of up shifts is impressive.

Try and drive both when your looking and let us know what you pick!

I've always had manual up until my most recent car (my first Scirocco) I bought a 170 TDI with DSG and its brilliant, I rarely use the paddles to be honest because the automatic box is so good (for my daily drive).

MANUAL!!!! I have heard good things about the DSG though, but I dont feel right when not driving a manual

I predict all new cars sold within the next 10 years will be automatic. There is no future for manual for several reasons:

Auto's are getting more gears so therefore will be more fuel efficient. VW are already working on a new 10 speed DSG....and isnt the new Audi A4 suppused to be 9 speed?

Self driving cars are on their way....and they'll only work with auto gears.

There will be more electric cars about in years to come and they only go forward in one gear!

We're already seeing a decline in manual gear boxes's in America. The vast majority drive auto's there.

I picked up my first auto DSG last week and I can't see me ever buying a manual ever again!

I went for a TDI DSG and love the DSG. Wouldn't go back to a manual. I drive it in auto most of the time as it's so responsive. After 10,000 miles in it I reckon I can make it change gear on demand using the accelerator or brake so I rarely use the paddles. I like manuals too, still enjoy driving my wife's Golf TDI manual, but DSG is a joy.

OK then, I have already put in my 2 cents worth earlier

But you can look at it another way
if you like manuals go with a manual and save a quid
if can stretch the finances the extra for a DSG than do it
the DSG just gives that extra bit of fun when you want it
and is well worth the extra money spent
but as others have said
check out them both and get what's right for you
then either way you will be happy
