I use a genuine VW 30 pin Apple MDI lead but with a genuine 30 Pin to Lightning converter, does the job. (2010 Scirocco RCD510 - White MFD)

I done this on my 2009 with an rcd510 you need to update the firmware in the mid unit using a flash drive. The softwares on a mk5gti forum

You can't update an rcd unit just the mdi unit. Have a look at this link http://www.my-gti.com/category/in-car-entertainment/mdi" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just note the VW MDI kits are not compatible with early RCD510 units. Updating firmware doesn't help either. If your RCD510 is part number 1K0057195AA or 1K0057195AB then MDI doesn't work.

If you have mdi already hooked up to an rcd510 the right firmware to get a lightning iPhone lead working will be on that link I posted.

Ah so I might be lucky then, the mdi in it is the factory fitted one not something I've retrofitted [SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

VW made a couple of these leads with different coloured collars on them, 1 colour works with the newer cars bases on the golf vii platform and won't work with older cars.

Mine worked initially but when swapped from iPod with old connector to iPhone6 the MDI had a shit fit ... I had to reset everything just to get the old iPod working ...

What is the colour of the band on the MDI end of your lead?

The dealers tried to sell me one with a green band which from reading on here only works with the Golf VII.
I bought one with a white band which worked straight away without having to upgrade any firmware.

Part number for the white band lead: 000 051 446 Q
