Bought a 2012 1.4 TSI 160 - Some Questions

Hey there!

First post here. I bought a the car from a VW dealer (Western VW in Edinburgh) last week and I'm collecting it tomorrow. Initially I was looking for 2.0 TSI but I was intrigued by the fact that this particular car had only 9700 miles on the clock and was manufacturer approved. So I went along to have a look and a test drive and was pleasantly surprised by how it felt. The original owner had also added a bunch of extras when it was bought, pretty much everything from the GT trim apart from cruise control and the seats, which are Merlin cloth. It has Interlagos alloys as well which are my favourite on the Scirocco and the car is deep black which also suits my tastes.

Since the day I passed my test two years ago I've been driving a 1997 Peugeot 306, 1.8 GLX. It had very low mileage for its age (about 38k) when I got it and is very nippy and a lot of fun to drive. I think it would have originally had 112BHP and it has presumably lost a few over the years. I also occasionally drive my dads 1.9JTDM Alfa GT Cloverleaf which has about 150BHP and is, as you'd expect from a diesel, very torquey. The Scirocco felt pretty robust performance wise, although I only really got one chance to open it up during the test run. Very refined too.

Anyway, my questions!

I forgot to ask for the service history (although I'm supposed to receive all of that stuff when I go in tomorrow), it sort of slipped my mind as this is the first time I've bought a car, my first having been given to me by an elderly relative who couldn't drive anymore. So my first question is this. How likely is a VW approved used car to have had any major issues? The car has had only one owner and with the low mileage it looks like it was used as a sort of Sunday afternoon treat. Whilst I've never owned a new car I have test driven a few and it seemed to me like it still had the new car feel.

Secondly, one thing I'd quite like to add cosmetically is the chrome tips for the exhausts. I looked at them on the VW parts website and I think they'd compliment the look of the alloys in contrast against the black of the paint job. Can these be retrofitted and if so would I simply ask the dealer to do it?

Thanks in advance for any response!

Buy Skoda Yeti tail pipes of ebay, it's what I (and a good few on here) did. They are the same as the VW ones only VW charge £130 for them and Skoda only want £30 for what I can only assume is the same part. Fit them yourself too as they just knock on with a hammer and a bit of wood to soften the blows. 2 min job.

And enjoy the new car!

Hi,

The early revision of the 1.4 tsi engines, especially the 160 had a lot of issues - but i'm glad to say you should be fine as you have the 2012 model, by that time VW pretty much sorted out all the issues.

Your model will contain the new revised pistons, fuel injectors, spark plugs, fuel pump and probably the coil packs.
VW revised all these parts from 2009 to 2012 as these engines had many issues with misfires, leading to eventual engine destruction - usually via piston failure.
They also released many ECU updates over the years.

But again thankfully you have a 2012 model - you should be fine. I doubt this car had any major issues, especially with the low mileage.

Enjoy your car! :)

Hope you enjoy the new car mate.

If you decide that you want the exhaust tips, I bought a set of the skoda yeti ones before I got my 2.0. Turns out I didn't need them so they have barely been out the box!

I'm just over the water in Fife so if you want them drop me a message and we can talk numbers.

Thanks for the replies folks. Good info.

Parsx, I'll let you know! Thanks for the offer in the meantime. Where abouts in Fife are you?

By the way, do any of you happen to know if it's possible to switch out the rear view mirror. For some reason the one in mine seemed to be a sort of beige colour which doesn't suit the dark interior very well. Also found it to be a little on the small side. Is it possible to buy and fit a Golf rear view?

Picked the car up today. Drove it round the bypass and then down the coast road to North Berwick. I was worried that it wouldn't feel as good as it had on the test drive but it was fantastic. Thoroughly pleased to have joined the club, haha!
