iPhone 5s + iOS 8.4 + Lightning MDI = Audio drop-outs?

Post by KarmaSumatra »

I'm using an iPhone 5s with the lightning MDI cable, connecting to an RCD 510. Ever since the iOS 8.4 update (the new Music app) I've had intermittent audio drop-outs during music playback. Is anyone else getting this?

I always used to get a single audio drop-out when the track changed (on a natural change, not a manual skip forward of a track), but it's now happening intermittently throughout playback.

Things I've tried to fix it:

* Wiggle all the cable connections (no difference)
* Try playing from SD card instead, in case fault is with RCD 510 wiring (no drop outs when playing from SD card)

Well thats odd... so you updated your iphone software and it caused trouble with music playing through your iphone? Also im assuming the SD is unrelated to the iphone - so the blame can only be with the RCD?

Yes, before iOS 8.4 I didn't have this problem. The SD card is plugged in the front of the RCD510, but that works fine, so the problem must lie in the interface between the phone and the RCD510.

I imagine that Apple changed something, in iOS 8.4, that affects how the MDI cable works.

Not gonna be much help as i'm not an Apple man BUT i am aware that the cables for ipods/iphones etc are very specific and you must find the right one...

Does seem odd that a cable would be affected by an update but then again I'm never shocked about the issues i read about these days!

How about as quick fix to determine if its the phone or the radio running off your AUX point for a week or so. If the issue is still there, you can point the finger at the RCD and maybe complete a hard reset, or the most likely is that your still having the issue and the problem will be with your software update.

Yeah Phil's right with the car specific part. I tried the green ended iPhone lightning on the wife's iPhone in my 2010 mdi. It charged but said device not supported, same with the usb cable & my HTC one m8. I've since been told that older mdi such as much won't work with newer phones like iPhone 5 onwards.

It worked (almost) perfectly before iOS 8.4 though.

I'm having the same problem, I'm also getting the wrong track info showing on the head unit (playing Metallica and it was showing Gloria Estefan) and Gloria wasn't even on my phone!

I get the wrong track info if I change track via the phone, instead of the stereo controls. I can't explain the appearance of Gloria though!

I get that sometimes if I search for a song on the headunit it keeps say the previous artist or album title with the rest of whatever I picked

I had a similar issue, I think it has to do with Apple Music. Have you tried quitting all of your apps, specifically music apps, before plugging in?

Only open your music app after you've plugged it in. I've also found it sometimes doesn't work if you plug it in before the head unit is turned on.

Mine is working fine after trying the above. Also, check that you don't have any dust in the Lightning port. I had loads and cleaned t out and it fixed random dropouts.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try them.

On my drive this morning it was really playing up until I disconnected and reconnected the phone - then it was fine! So annoying. :grumpy:
