Unforunately my first post here has to be a problem description... [emoji34]
I hear a metallic rattle not very loud, like shaking a can containing tiny rocks, from the front part of the engine. This happens only if I press the accelerator very smoothly and only between 1500-2500rpms. Above that it goes away.
It does it both standing and moving and only if the rpms go up slowly. It also does that in same rpms at decceleration.
I've read a tone of complaints about wastegate rattles but only with k03 turbo cars, not k04. Also I hear mine at the front part of the engine and not in the back where the turbo is located.
I haven' t had time to take the car to the stealer here because it's holiday. I will do that probably next week.
An indepedent shop here told me that this is normal and shouldn't be a problem and the noise is coming from the pulleys???
Has anyone experienced something similar with the R?
Any suggestions would be great.
My car's first reg is on May/2012. It has 35k kilometers on the clock and has a Revo stg1 tune and also an APR full exhaust.
On road the car works flawlessly and has zero issues or whatsoever.

Won't be very helpful to you, but I have pretty much the same situation with my Fiat Punto, at the same rpm.
And I've been told the same thing - "don't worry" :/

I have a similar issue, when it went in to the dealer to get another issue resolved they couldn't find any problem with the wastegate which is what I thought it was.
Noise is still there unfortunately

I'm afraid they will give me the same answer, that nothing is wrong and this is a normal sound of the engine.
Did they say where the noise was coming from?
Is your car chipped?

Yesterday I visited the dealer and their master technician heard it. He told me that the rattle is not coming from the wastegate but somewhere from the alternator, some tensioner or water pump and that he has to use a stethoscope in order to be sure. He also noticed that I need a new alternator belt because it made some kind of whistling noise.
Thank God the rattle is replicable every time and I suppose it would be an easy diagnose and fix.
So I booked the car for inspection on next Monday. I hope I won't get robbed..

Just an update.
Left the car in the morning at the dealer.
A couple of hours later they called me and said that the noise is coming from somewhere inside the oil pan, maybe from the the oil pump's chain or it's tensioner and that they have to remove the oil pan in order to check.
They will try this tomorrow morning and call me if they find anything.

Conclusion.
Dealer stripped out almost everything and couldn't find anything wrong.
Even checked oil pump chain tensioner inside the oil pan.
Their explanation was that it's coming from the bottom part of the engine and maybe from inside of the oil pump itself but can't be 100% sure.
Their suggestion is to leave the car as is since it works perfectly, which I will do.
They charged me around 75 euros for all the inspection.

I have the exact same problem , I purchased the wastegate clip only to find it just fits the k03 turbo , the noise is doing my head in !! Mine is getting louder. I'm having my cambelt and water pump changed soon as it's due so if it's not gone after that I will be taking it to a mechanic and not a vw one as they just long everyone off saying your car should sound like that !!

Exact same problem here, light acceleration and it would make a diesel like rattle on my 2.0 TSi, that just made the car sound cheap and nasty. I just got the clip and had it installed (£15 for the part - £60 for labour at the dealer (ouch)), but its like a new car again. Thanks to the forums for the help, as they didn't know what it was until i told them the TSB!

Yeah the R has a Ko4 turbo so the clip won't fit.

A lot of people have this problem across the Atlantic with the Golf R, same engine with the Scirocco R.
Hopefully I will have some pictures somewhere, il try dig them out. Basically if you get your car on a ramp you will see the fuel tank at the rear right side, from this you will see some kind of casing which contains the fuel lines protected from foreign debris naturally. You will be able to see a few holes along the way for drainage I assume if you fill these holes with as much padding as possible your rattle will be gone. I used stuff which you would package fragile things in the post or what would come over a fridge freezer when bought new.
The guys at VW in Germany had all sorts of hearing aids to find the rattle its actually coming from the fuel being pumped through and vibrating on the chassis somewhere that you cannot see. Use some kind of rod to probe the material as far down as possible in both directions to try and stop the movement of the lines and take the rattle away.
Hope this helps!

I have a 170gt tdi and after only having it ten days it is by far the best car I've had apart from the strange metallic clunky rattle hat has appeared over he past few days, to me it sounds like a belt/chain, I have done some research and came across this thread, it definitely isn't anything loose as in the bonnet etc. Sounds mechanical, before I take it to the garage would anyone have any ideas what it could be. It's only around low revs, I have the DSG box so say when I'm doing 10-20mph under 2000rpm in D3 it rattles, If I manually take over he box and drop it into 2 the revs go up and the rattle goes, same as normal driving it's not there. Just at very low speeds, it sounds likes a tractor almost. Very loud vibrating. Ive done 55000 miles and it's just had a service and MOT no pick ups. Any feedback would be appreciated, I don't mean to take over the post, just seemed relavent.

Did you have the same rattle heard in the above video?
This rattle comes from the front part of the engine.
