Scirocco Central

I now look at TTs (new shape) and think they look a bit old hat compared to the Scirocco, I did toy with one, then realised how over rated (and under braked they are), impractical and not to mention how poorly equipped they are, the Scirocco is the TT Shooting break that never was.....

I thought the shooting brake concept was the bees knees. Looked very well proportioned. I think the current TT looks a little bit too 'try hard'. They had a very hard act to follow with the styling of the original and I think they over did it a bit on the current one. It also looks quite a bit bigger even though I don't think there's much in it.

i'm think the old one is starting to look the less dated these days

The old TT is a classic shape. It's one of those designs that is effortlessly 'right'.

The new one looks a bit fat.

This was my big decision about 2 months ago.

I test drove both the 2.0 t and the 2.0 tdi, I have to say I actually prefered the tdi, as there was just constant power no mater what gear and no lag or kick just smooth power all through the range, it was also refreshign to see the needle go all the way to 5500. It will be interesting to see if they use the same spec engine in the roc.

The thing that did it for me is once I was really paying attention just how many there are on the road, I also agree the rear seats are a waste of space a 911 does a better job and thats saying something well almost. Ultimate it also came down to price as the standard TT was a good 4k more and thats before you have speced it to match the standard spec of the roc.

good to see we came to the same conclusion langford, i drove an s3 back to the tt, having had a couple of a3s i wasn't expecting much from the s3, in reality it felt more special than the tt, however, was not as much fun or engaging as a gti editon 30, by the time the s3 sportsback was priced common sense prevailed, autocar have ordered a tt tdi and with extras is £38k!!!

The TT is a VERY nice car,make no bones about it.it Looks great and is superb to drive,it's jsut a really nice thing.It's image is another topic though.It's hard to compare the two because they really don't even fall close on price,the TT is significantly more expensive than the scirocco when you spec them similarly.The new entry level TT (1.8TSFI) will close the gap a bit,and will be no slouch either at around 1240kg or under but still works out a few grand more than a scirocco of similar spec.The basic TT starts to make more sense with the introduction of the 1.8 IMO,if you're not too bothered about 18" wheels and magneride etc,but as soon as you add that and a couple of other bits you're quickly up to £27 plus again.The scirocco still undercuts it quite significantly and having spent time with both cars i'd find it hard to justify the extra for the TT.

having not had the pleasure of driving a scirroco yet but given my fondness for gtis i am working on the theory the scirocco is the car more 'drivers' want to drive, never seen a tt in driven in anger, i think i will hunt them out in car parks for a few months when mine arrives to see which one attracts the most attention

ok i have now driven both with 3 up (all be it i lasted 5 mins in the rear of a TT and had a bad back for days) and bar the dash (the TTs is better) happy with my purchase, i was gutted i did not get on with the TT as i had wanted one for a couple of years (interstingly Audi are currenlty officially discounting TT roadsters at the moment), fortunately no one buys Autoexpress so may not get a TT backlash from owners and estate agents in the current credit crunch will be having push bikes (we can live in hope)

the £5K saving (at least I reckon when you starting hitting the options lists grow) should pay for the copious amounts of tyres i will no doubt get through as i drive the door handles off it

I changed from a TT 2.0T to the Scirocco. I had a terrible ownership experience for the 4 months I owned the car. Ratttles, squeaks, inaccurate steering, lack of power.. the list of problems was endless. The Audi dealer was so unhelpful throughout the experience and even Audi UK didn't have any interest. They had my money and that was that.

The Roc lacks the sense of occasion yes but it's solid, well screwed together, grips considerably harder and has had no major problems. I also think the specification of the TT for what you pay is very miserly.

For me anyhoos the TT always suffers from the perception of being a birds / hairdressers car... it's very stylish - perhaps too stylish... the Roc grabs me somewhere primal... it's unexplainable but I absolutely LOVE that car... looks, drive, the 'X' factor... it's got it all in buckets...

Test drove a MKII TT TDi and found the ride unbearably hard - presumably they uprated the springs to counter the weight of the diesel engine.
Also, the lack of rear head room ruled it out for me.

A shooting brake would have been a contender, but the roc gives you that for a more affordable price.

The interior lacks a little of the class of an Audi, but the build quality is as good imo, albeit with slightly cheaper materials.

Personally, I think Audi have lost the plot and have drifted away from what made the original A3/A4/TT range so special. Everything's bloated with a big gob.
And Audi's are no longer a discerning choice - the world and his wife has one now.

Interesting thread. Toying between a year old TT or a new scirroco. Not going to call it until I've driven both but I have to say the TT is light years ahead on the interior dept.. But I suppose you pay a price (money wise) for that.

I actually much prefer the look of the new Audi TT to the old one. Looks like sleeker and sportier IMO. The main issues I had with it were price and the fact that the rear seats are useless for carrying adult passengers!

As others have mentioned it's difficult to compare then when there's around a £4k price difference for pretty much the same car. The biggest problem for me would be that when you think it's gonna be £30k for a nicely specc'd 2.0T Audi TT I cant help but think i'd prefer a year old Porsche Cayman, Nissan 370Z, Audi S3 or just about anything else!. It's just that when you start talking about £30k then 200bhp/FWD sounds a bit hard to swallow for that kind of money IMO!

if the both 'drive' the same then I suppose it's going to be down to if I'm happy to spend the same money and get a 57 plate with not to bad spec TT against a very good spec brand new rocco.

This is a debate i had before i purchased the Roco. I really like the TT but i prefered the more masculine looks of the Roco.

Changed from a 2010 TTS DSG to a manual GT 170 Tdi in May 2011. No question which is more engaging for everyday use. TTS with DSG and 19" rims absolutely pointless for UK roads unless you own a racetrack. Delighted with the Scirocco.

We went to look at the TT, same engine and box combo that we've ordered in the Roc. Lifted the tail gate on the TT...............no room for the Cocker. No contest.

Fingers crossed folks I could be driving the Roc within the next couple of weeks.

The T.T. for me is still a hairdressers car, a bit girly, less so in the new model, but its just a little step up form the mini in appearance terms, my mate calls it a golf in drag I don't think he's far from the truth.The roc is definitely a boys car. A few of girls at work hanker after the Audi, says it all really.
