Irritating DSG
Hi. Its been nearly 2 months now since I picked the Rocco up and I love it - apart from the gearbox. Everything is fine, it changes smoothly, no clunks or knocks, but, does never seems to be in the right gear and is always in a rush to get into 5th or 6th - mine changes into 6th at 40mph, and then seems like the engine is lugging...... Putting it into Sport is too much for a day to day drive - it doesn't change until nearly 4000 rpm.
Is this normal, and how does everyone else with the DSG 6 gearbox drive theirs ? Has anyone had theirs remapped with decent software that is useable day to day. Ideally I'd like a remap that increases the change revs by about 500 rpm....

Been driving mine for a month now and have the same opinion.
I do believe when you use 'D' the engine is in ECO mode trying to be economical as possible hence, the rush to 6th.
Sport, well I'd expect it to high in the rev range but it's not a practical alternative to Drive I find.
Day to day driving it does have it's annoyances....but i'm going to persist and I WILL like DSG! LOL

Re: Irritating DSG
Mine is the same although it doesn't really bother me, it seems to tick over quite nicely even when its in 6th at 40+mph but as soon as I want to put my foot down the gear changes are so quick it doesn't really matter, also I guess the wonderful people at VW must have put a lot of testing into which gear is most economical at each speed so on my day to day commute I'm quite happy to go with whatever the box does.

Thanks chaps..... looks like I'll have to live with it then ! I would much rather have a smoother drive though and lose 5mpg, than a drive that seems like it struggling...... Apart from that, I absolutely love the car....

Re: Irritating DSG
Maybe try talking to Rev/APR, they do DSG gearbox remaps with their own software, that could well sort the issue for you.Coxieboy wrote:Thanks chaps..... looks like I'll have to live with it then ! Re: Irritating DSG
I find it depends on the road. There's always a round-a-bout with a slight incline that I drive to work every day.... the car always goes straight to 6th which is a pain but it's partially down to me feathering the accelerate so i've adjusted my driving style a bit so it stays in 4th-5th which it much better.Coxieboy wrote:than a drive that seems like it struggling.......
It's not a design floor just my driving style.
Reminds me of my old Celica VVTLi....had to change my driving style back then and work the gears a lot more revving the nuts off it to get anywhere! lol

Re: Irritating DSG
How do you change your driving style SCOTTRS ? Its impossible to rag the nuts off it around town. Mine has an annoying habit of changing down mid corner, and mind roundabout as well - should I be a little more aggressive with it ?

Re: Irritating DSG
Just remap your dsg box, in combination with chiptuning it Isn't very expensive.
I drive à diesel and raised the minimum up and downshift points in D-mode by +/- 200 rpm. You can adjust it for every gear seperately. I never use sport mode.
I left the first 2 gears untouched. Its makes a hell of à difference. Much more reactive car on the throtle.
I lowered the Max rpm to 4100 rpm just to fit the new torque and hp figures of the engine after the remap. I dont like reving the diesel al the way to 5500 rpm. I just looked at the rpm bandwith where i can get the most torque and hp possible, looking at the dyno sheet.

Re: Irritating DSG
Be patient, it adapts to your driving style and you learn to use the throttle in the right position to make it hold on to a gear.
Dsg does have it's quirks but you learn to drive around them, to the point you no longer notice them.

Thanks everyone, maybe I am too impatient..... although, Roy_01, I do like the sound of what you've done. What remap and chip did you go for ?

Re: Irritating DSG
The low rpm's drove me nuts also. It doesn't sound and felt good. And i drive a lot of milage and i dont want to adjust my driving behaviour to the car, so i adjust the engine and dsg.
I live in Holland just went to a local tuner.
Stock engine is 140 hp and 310 nm and after remap 180 hp and 380 nm.
The driveability is much better now with the dsg remap and increased power.
I changed the minimum upshiftpoints of the 3-4-5 gear to 1800 rpm and the downshift of the 4-5-6 gear to 1300 rpm. The minimum downshiftpoint of the 3th gear was raised from 900 to 1050 rpm. I first changed it to 1200 but it made the car nervous when driving at low speeds so i changed it again.
The car reacts better when you suddenly hit the throtle because the rpm doesn't go as low before around 1000 rpm. Before the remap you could hear/feel vibrations when i did the same driving on low rpm's in the higher gears. And at the same time it solves most of the gear downshifts moments, didnt liked this either. Im glad i did make this adjustment. I payed around 800 euro for engine remap, dsg remap and egr shutoff.

Around 74 km/h, i did this on purpose because i drive a lot of 80 km/h roads.Coxieboy wrote:I want..... !! At what speed does your change into 6th now ?
