6 Speed DSG Vs 7 Speed DSG

As per title whats the difference between the two boxes? The 1.4 gets the 7 speed while the other engines get the 6 speed. Why is this? Is the 6 speed older and is the 7 speed a better gearbox?

7 speed is a dry clutch and 6 speed is a wet (submerged in oil) clutch - VW haven't worked out how to do a dry clutch in the torquier models (TDI and 2.0TSI) without it being ragged to death. Dry clutch is therefore only currently suitable for the 1.4TSI at the moment. Not only does the 7th gear make it more economical, the fact that it's not doing its stuff through oil (less resistance) also helps.

It seems that the 7 speed dry clutch will wear out too quickly on the torquier models.

Thank you, for a good post that was very informative. I was curious to know what the differences were. Do you think a wet Vs dry clutch will have different wear rates?

Wet (permanently lubricated, so less friction/wear between the contacting components?) clutch might last longer - it's proven technology with a few years reliability history - the dry one isbrand new (although i'm sure VW will have done endurance tests)

VW state mileage life is the same for both wet & dry gearboxes. It's about 300,000 km service life for the clutches. Dry gearbox uses thicker plates to compensate.

Limit on 7 speed is 250Nm torque at present.

7 speed has advantage that the operating temperature range is better because oil is only used for gearbox/hydraulics controls and therefore is not a compromise as in the 6 speeder where the oil is also used in the clutches. Therefore finer control can be acheived.

This leads to smoother gear changing. Certainly the 7 speeders I have driven are smooth than the six speeders.

And less oil means less weight. There's a 20 kg weight different betwen the gearboxes.

Hi there,

have 7 speed dsg on my roc . I've noticed that it is abit noisy !
I suppose that sometimes ,when my windows are down, I hear a slight metallic gear noise like "Clink-Clunk"
(when dsg up or down the speed - from 1 to 2 or from 3 to 2 )

Has anyone noticed same or similar noise or Do I have a problem on my 7 speed dsg ??

As far as I know it is a "dry gearbox" so can it be the reason ?

My 6 speed DSG can make a few clunks, only noticeable when the windows are down mind you.

That said, the lovely "PARP" from 1st to 2nd when driving in "D" is something I love!!
